Song of the Day #4,240: ‘So Emotional’ – Whitney Houston

Like The Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston earned entrance into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame the first time she was nominated. In her case, that nomination came ten years after her initial eligibility in 2010.

Had she made it in back then she would have been alive to see it happen, but Houston drowned in a bathtub two years later while under the influence of several drugs. She died the night before that year’s Grammy awards, turning that celebration into a solemn affair (shades of Kobe Bryant’s pre-Grammys passing this year).

Song of the Day #4,239: ‘Listen to the Music’ – The Doobie Brothers

It should come as no surprise that The Doobie Brothers are first-ballot Hall of Famers, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame the first year they were nominated.

The surprise is that the nomination came 23 years after they were first eligible. Since 1997, the board of the Rock Hall has failed to include the California rockers on the ballot. Outrageous!

It’s a couple of decades late, but one of the Hall’s most notorious omissions has been remedied.

Song of the Day #4,238: ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ – Depeche Mode

Last April, I started a series on inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, highlighting songs from the 2019 honorees. I later jumped back a year and featured the 2018 class, with plans to work backward through the years and eventually cover every Rock Hall member.

Before I continue the trip back through time, though, I have a new class to cover. The 2020 inductees were announced a couple of weeks ago, and this week I will dedicate a post to each of the six recognized artists.

Song of the Day #4,067: ‘Nights in White Satin’ – The Moody Blues

The final inductee in the 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class is the English prog rock band The Moody Blues. They were first eligible in 1989 but went un-nominated until last year’s successful bid.

I know next to nothing about The Moody Blues, which is why today’s SOTD is the first song of theirs I’ve posted after more than 4,000 Songs of the Day. This song, ‘Nights in White Satin,’ is their biggest hit and the only one I recall ever hearing.

Song of the Day #4,066: ‘Just What I Needed’ – The Cars

The Cars became eligible for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame consideration in 2003 but weren’t nominated until 2016. They missed the cut that year, as well as the following year, before being inducted in 2018.

Like most of that year’s entrants, The Cars are another act that really should have made it in sooner. The Boston-based quintet was a pioneering New Wave band that blended power pop and guitar rock into irresistible radio hits, helping pave the way for a slew of New Wave acts in both American and the UK.
