Song of the Day #4,533: ‘Colors’ – Black Pumas

Black Pumas is a duo based in Austin, Texas, that writes and records soul music that would have felt right at home in the 60s and 70s.

The band formed in 2018, when producer Adrian Quesada sought a vocalist for some new tracks and was introduced to singer-songwriter Eric Burton, whose throwback vibe proved a perfect fit. The pair released their debut, self-titled, album in 2019.

Song of the Day #4,139: ‘Colors’ – Halsey

‘Colors’ is the third single from Halsey’s debut album Badlands, released in 2015. Since then Halsey has become a pretty big deal, releasing nine Top 20 singles, five of which reached the Top 10 and two of which hit #1.

My older daughter has been on the Halsey train since before this album dropped. I’m half a fan through osmosis, though I’ve never really been grabbed enough by her music to listen to either of her albums all the way through.

Song of the Day #3,429: ‘Dear Life’ – Beck

It’s crazy how artists quietly put together careers that start to feel like legacies. Take Beck, who still has the impish charm of the nerd-punk who crashed MTV with “I’m a Loser,” yet somehow is entering his 25th year as a recording artist.

This year’s Colors is Beck’s 13th studio album, released three years after the unlikely Album of the Year Grammy winner Morning Phase. Somehow, this is the first traditional pop album he’s recorded. Or at least as traditional as an oddball like Beck can get.
