Song of the Day #1,712: ‘And Your Bird Can Sing’ – Claudia Jardine
Song of the Day #1,711: ‘If I Fell’ – Sara Wee
I’ve been a bad, bad blogger. It’s been a hectic couple of weeks at work and I have neglected the blog to such an extent that I am currently five hours from my next scheduled Song of the Day post and I have nothing scheduled to run.
That might not seem so bad if you don’t know that I generally write these posts at least one to two weeks in advance. All those Arcade Fire posts… when I wrote them, not only did we not know who the new pope was, I don’t think the old one had even stepped down.
So this is uncomfortable territory for me.
Song of the Day #1,710: ‘Dayton, Ohio – 1903’ – Randy Newman
Randy Newman’s Sail Away is one of my very favorite albums — it is alternately bittersweet and cynical, beautiful and brutal. I don’t know if it gets the attention and respect it deserves.
I see it was ranked #321 on Rolling Stones’ list of the 500 greatest albums — on the one hand, considering how many albums have been recorded over the past 50+ years, making the list at all is an honor; but on the other hand, are you really telling me there are 320 albums better than this one? Bullshit.
Song of the Day #1,709: ‘Open Sesame’ – Kool & The Gang
I don’t really have much to say about today’s Random Weekend selection except that a) this is one of the last tracks I would choose to highlight from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack if it were up to me; and b) John Travolta was such a sexy and dynamic presence back in the day and boy has he turned into a freakshow over the past several years.
