Song of the Day #1,852: ‘Hopeless Wanderer’ – Mumford & Sons

mumford_babelI don’t know if it’s cool to like Mumford & Sons now, or if they’ve already moved on to overplayed and overrated.

I remember when Coldplay was the hippest band around and then a year or too later they were the punchline of a “You know how I know you’re gay?” joke in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. I have the feeling that Mumford & Sons is on the brink of that conversion.

Song of the Day #1,851: ‘You Still Believe In Me (Vocal Track)’ – The Beach Boys

pet_soundsHere’s a nice marriage of art and science. Alexander Chen, of the Google Creative Lab, programmed this visualization of an isolated Beach Boys vocal track based on the aural dynamics of church bells.

Song of the Day #1,850: ‘Nice’ – Thisway

thiswayI’ve been writing this blog long enough now (more than 5 years without missing a day!) that sometimes previous posts are completely new to me.

When Thisway popped up as today’s Random Weekend selection, I started writing about how I have no recollection of how I discovered this band and their one album in the late 90s. catching_fireThrough the first seven months of 2013, I’ve seen only 11 movies (they’re listed over on the right). That’s pretty sad by my standards, even given the fact that my in-theater movie consumption has decreased in recent years.

I can name about ten more that I wish I’d seen (and will catch up with on DVD, I hope), but none that I’m truly kicking myself over.

However, the back half of the year promises to deliver a bunch of films with real potential. I have identified 16 upcoming movies I’m eager to see and listed them below in order of least to most anticipation.

For the record, the final episodes of Breaking Bad take the crown as the work I’m most dying to experience, but these big-screen efforts are next in line.

Song of the Day #1,849: ‘Cold Comfort Flowers’ – Fountains of Wayne

sky_full_of_holesOne of the reasons I love Fountains of Wayne is that their lyrics are so straight-forward and relatable.

They write about people who might live in your neighborhood, pass by you on the highway, sit in the cubicle next to yours at work.

But today’s random SOTD, ‘Cold Comfort Flowers’ from the band’s last album, Sky Full of Holes, is a different ballgame.
