Song of the Day #2,094: ‘Flashbulb Eyes’ – Arcade Fire

arcade_fire_reflektorHere is one of the sillier songs from Arcade Fire’s 2013 album, Reflektor, which as a whole is a pretty silly record.

This song is pretty basic (there are only about 25 words in the whole thing) and it contains the same theme as much of the band’s recent work — the dehumanization of technology. When we all live on and in front of screens, what does that say about humanity?

Song of the Day #2,093: ‘We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow’ – Soko

soko_we_might_be_deadThe song at #9 in the Billboard Hot 100 is a perfect example of a relatively recent change to Billboard’s tracking formula.

Song of the Day #2,092: ‘Drunk in Love’ – Beyoncé

beyonce_drunk_in_loveOne Republic is still hanging out in the Billboard top ten with ‘Counting Stars,’ spending its 39th week on the chart at #7.

Song of the Day #2,091: ‘Team’ – Lorde

lorde_pure_heroinIn Billboard’s sixth slot is ‘Team,’ the latest single from Lorde’s juggernaut Pure Heroine.

‘Team’ is a sister song to ‘Royals,’ with the same “we live in cities you’ll never see onscreen” message and disdain for hip-hop excess. Here she sums up that boredom with the great line, “I’m kind of over gettin’ told to throw my hands up in the air… so there.”

Song of the Day #2,090: ‘Pompeii’ – Bastille

bastille_pompeiiJason Derulo’s unfortunate ‘Talk Dirty‘ sits at #4, and at #5 on the latest Billboard Hot 100 chart is Bastille with ‘Pompeii.’

I remember hearing this band (and I believe this song) on Saturday Night Live a couple of months back. My wife liked their sound and we came close to downloading the album but wound up not for some reason.

I would have expected this song to crack the top ten closer to that television appearance, but maybe SNL doesn’t move the dial like it used to.
