Song of the Day #2,549: ‘How to Be a Heartbreaker’ – Marina and the Diamonds

marina_diamonds_heartbreakerMy final selection of this week of songs introduced to me by my daughter is from an artist I would never have known otherwise. The other acts I featured this week were all on my radar, but Marina and the Diamonds (the stage name of Welsh singer-songwriter Marina Lambrini Diamandis) was completely new.

The 29-year-old has released three albums since 2010, the latest (titled Froot) in March of this year.

Song of the Day #2,548: ‘Cool For the Summer’ – Demi Lovato

demi_lovato_cool_summerSetting the boys aside for a moment, here’s Demi Lovato with a summer anthem that hints at a secret romance between two women.

Song of the Day #2,547: ‘Chains’ – Nick Jonas

nick_jonas_chainsBased on the first three selections this week, you might guess that my 13-year-old’s hormones are playing as big a role in her musical taste as her ears.

Song of the Day #2,546: ‘Stitches’ – Shawn Mendes

shawn_mendes_stitchesI’m guessing Shawn Mendes appeals to my 13 year-old daughter in part because they’re practically in the same grade.

The Canadian lad is 16 and got his start posting song covers to Vine. Yes, Vine, which has a 6-second time limit. Talk about appealing to short attention spans!

‘Stitches’ has been popping up more and more on Sirius (the Radio Disney channel, specifically) and every time I find myself singing along.

Song of the Day #2,545: ‘Night Changes’ – One Direction

1d_night_changesI always had visions of indoctrinating my children in my cultural ways, raising fans of the same music, television and movies that have moved me over the years.

That has happened, to some extent. My daughters enjoy some of my favorites, and we’ve discovered new favorites together.

But the vision of young Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan fans running around the house… it was clearly never meant to be.
