Throwing back to the week of August 2, 1975, we find the Eagles atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘One of These Nights,’ title track of the band’s breakthrough fourth album.
At #2, where it stayed for three weeks, was ‘I’n Not in Love,’ the ethereal ballad by English art-pop band 10cc. This was one of two top five U.S. singles for 10cc, the other being the very different ‘The Things We Do For Love,’ released the following year.
The last Rock & Roll Hall of Fame snub I’ll mention is Phil Collins, who is in the Hall as a member of Genesis but not as a solo artist. He’s been eligible since 2007 but never nominated.
It’s hard to argue against Collins based on the stats. His eight studio albums, plus soundtracks and compilations, have sold more than 150 million copies worldwide and 35 million in the U.S. He is a Grammy and Academy Award winner with seven #1 hits and another seven in the top ten.
Beck has been eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 2019 and was nominated once, in 2022. That’s not a long time compared to some other snubs but he still feels overdue.
The singer-songwriter has had commercial success (a top ten hit in ‘Loser,’ several Gold and Platinum albums), strong critical acclaim, and industry recognition (he has won eight Grammys and been nominated for Album of the Year three times, winning for 2015’s Morning Phase).
I like to close out the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame weeks by highlighting artists I love who haven’t (yet) been inducted.
I’ve named The Smiths as the most egregious oversight before and I see no reason not to continue beating that drum today. The English rock band has been eligible since 2009 and nominated twice (in 2015 and 2016) but has yet to make the cut.
The final inductee from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2011 is singer-songwriter Tom Waits. Waits was eligible starting in 1999 and made it in the first year he was nominated.
I have very little familiarity with Waits’ discography, and I can’t say I enjoy listening to the songs I have heard, but I have no issue whatsoever with his inclusion in the Rock Hall. He is an iconic figure and a singular talent, an artist who has crossed and blended genres and influenced a generation of musicians.
