Spike Jonze delivered Being John Malkovich and Adaptation his first two times up to bat. Now, without writer Charlie Kaufman on his team, he’s tackling Maurice Sendak’s beloved children’s book Where the Wild Things Are. And this first glimpse looks amazing.

Apart from the fabulous imagery and the potential for poignant scenes about the magic and uncertainty of childhood, you have Catherine Keener and Mark Ruffalo in the human roles. What more can you ask for?

‘Put the chicken fingers down!’

bruceI’ve always heard what an amazing live performer Bruce Springsteen is (particularly when backed by the E-Street Band) but last night’s Super Bowl halftime show was the first time I got to experience it… televised, at least. And the rumors of his greatness were not exaggerated.

Alex, never a huge fan of The Boss, turned to me after the show and said “We have to see Bruce Springsteen live the next time he comes down here” and I was right with her.

Best. Performance. Ever.

I’m so glad I stumbled across this on YouTube… it’s Fiona Apple and Elvis Costello performing the latter’s great song ‘I Want You’ on a VH1 special from a couple years back.

This clip encapsulates what I love about Fiona Apple as a performer… not just the technically impressive vocals, but the extraordinary passion she puts into every song. She is always, to use an acting term, entirely in the moment. So much so she can be uncomfortable to watch sometimes, in a good way.
