Today’s Random iTunes Selection is a track from Leonard Cohen’s 1967 debut album, The Songs of Leonard Cohen. The album, and this song, showcases Cohen’s literary bent — he was an author and poet before he started recording music — and many keyboards have been worn out dissecting the meaning of these lyrics.

Song of the Day #2,805: ‘Wrap Your Arms Around Me’ – Barenaked Ladies
Here’s a very pretty song from Barenaked Ladies’ debut album, Gordon. The lovely acoustic guitar and impressive vocal harmonies mask the fact that it appears to be sung from the perspective of either a murderer, a perpetrator of domestic violence or both.
The opening line about tracing a likeness of the woman’s body suggests a chalk outline at a crime scene, supporting the murder interpretation. The line “I regret every time I raised my voice” in the final verse implies that these two are in a relationship. My take is that he finally went too far and his abuse resulted in her death.
Song of the Day #2,804: ‘Hands to Myself- ‘ Selena Gomez
Rounding out the best Billboard recap yet is Selena Gomez with the third hit from her excellent 2015 album Revival. ‘Hands to Myself’ follows ‘Good For You’ and ‘Same Old Love’ up the charts, solidifying Gomez’s transformation into an adult pop star.
‘Hands to Myself’ is a simple, sexy track that sounds to me like Robyn sounding like Prince. It’s exotic but spare, like the rest of Revival.
Song of the Day #2,803: ‘Roses’ – The Chainsmokers feat. Rozes
My best-ever Billboard countdown is approaching its end, and the pressure is on these next two acts to not screw up the streak of enjoyable music. In fact, I’m already familiar with the final song of the week so it really all comes down to today.
At #9 is ‘Roses’ by The Chainsmokers featuring Rozes. We’re in a little danger here because The Chainsmokers are the DJ duo responsible for the 2014 track ‘#Selfie,’ which was amusing but also rather horrible.
Song of the Day #2,802: ‘Cake By the Ocean’ – DNCE
At #8 on Billboard’s Hot 100 we have our first and only track that’s already been featured on the blog — Adele’s ‘Hello.’ That baby is hanging on months after it debuted. But given the record-shattering sales of Adele’s 25, I’m surprised this is still the only song to make a real splash.
In the ninth spot is ‘Cake By the Ocean’ by DNCE. DNCE is a band formed last year by Joe Jonas and this track, their first single, was released in September and has taken a leisurely stroll into the top ten.
