Song of the Day #3,365: ‘Needle in the Hay’ – Elliott Smith

Things turn a bit darker on Day Eight of the 30 Day Music Challenge, as we are asked to come up with ‘A Song About Drugs Or Alcohol.’ Sure, there are plenty of fun drinking songs, but my mind went immediately to more cautionary tales.

No artist in my music collection is more appropriate for this category than Elliott Smith, whose heroin addiction informed so many of his songs.

Song of the Day #3,364: ‘Honeymoon’ – Lana Del Rey

Day Seven of the 30 Day Music Challenge is a fun one: ‘A Song To Drive To.’ So many ways to go with this.

My initial thought was a song that you play while driving fast down an open road in broad daylight. A couple of thematically and musically appropriate choices came to me right away: Rihanna’s ‘Shut Up and Drive‘ and Sing Street’s ‘Drive It Like You Stole It.’ Another obvious one is a song I consider the epitome of open road tunes, Tom Petty’s ‘Runnin’ Down a Dream.’

Song of the Day #3,363: ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’ – Michael Jackson

Getting back to the 30 Day Music Challenge, today’s task is to name ‘A Song That Makes You Want To Dance.’ Lots of great candidates here.

Song of the Day #3,362: ‘Corazon’ – Titán

Today’s Random Weekend selection marks the sixth time a song from the Amores Perros soundtrack has been featured on the blog. Three of the other five were also Random Weekend picks. Guess the Random iTunes Fairy has a thing for Mexican films.

Amores Perros remains my favorite Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu film, even after the man won back-to-back Best Director Oscars for Birdman and The Revenant. Amores Perros was his feature length debut and in my opinion he never topped it.

Song of the Day #3,361: ‘This is the Time’ – Billy Joel

A few weeks after Billy Joel won the Montauk Madness competition, the Randon iTunes Fairy has served up a song aimed at making all of us regret that outcome.

Billy Joel has written and recorded dozens of excellent songs and a handful of real stinkers. ‘This is the Time,’ from 1986’s otherwise fine album The Bridge, might be the stinkiest.
