Song of the Day #3,550: ’24’ – Sara King

I can offer up no better ’24’ song than Lana Del Rey’s rejected Bond theme, released on her 2015 album Honeymoon.

This track was reportedly submitted for Spectre, the 24th Bond film, but turned down in favor of Sam Smith’s garbage song ‘Writing’s On the Wall.’ Although it was trashed by critics, ‘Writing’s On the Wall’ went on to win both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Song. Weak.

I’ve already featured Del Rey’s studio version of ’24,’ in all its glory, so today I offer up a nice cover version by YouTube singer Sara King. I can’t tell if King has any professional aspirations, but she has uploaded 220 covers to her YouTube channel, which feels like a career in itself.

[Verse 1]
There’s only 24 hours in a day
And half as many ways for you to lie to me, my little love
There’s only 24 hours in a day
And half of those, you lay awake
With thoughts of murder and carnage
[Pre-Chorus]
If you lie down with dogs, then you’ll get fleas
Be careful of the company you keep

[Chorus]
There’s only 24 hours
And that’s not enough
To lie like you lie or
Love like you love

[Verse 2]
There’s only 24 hours in a day
And half of those you lay
Between the sheets with me, my lying love
There’s only 24 hours, so you’d say
For most of them you pay
For all the things they paid you for, my love

[Pre-Chorus – Variation]
If you lie down with dogs, then you’ll get fleas
Be careful of the ones you choose to leave

[Chorus]
There’s only 24 hours
And that’s not enough
To lie like you lie or
Love like you love

[Outro]
Give me your heat
Give me your diamonds
You hit that street
And my crooked words
You count to three
While they’re all dying
You’re hard to reach
You’re cold to touch

Admittedly, my dislike of Sam Smith is substantial, but this would have been such a better Bond song! Nice cover too.
