Song of the Day #4,399: ‘Are You Bored Yet?’ – Wallows feat. Clairo

An interesting sub-genre of the new music I’ve been introduced to by my daughters is ‘Bands Featuring Young NetFlix Actors.’

Post Animal, who I’m not featuring as part of this series (some tough cuts had to be made), boasts Stranger Things‘ Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) on guitar and vocals. And today’s featured artist, Wallows, has 13 Reasons Why star Dylan Millette as a songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist.

Song of the Day #4,398: ‘Highly Suspicious’ – My Morning Jacket

My Morning Jacket’s sound could best be described as melancholy psychedlic Southern rock. Most of their songs are one or more of those things, and often all of those things at the same time.

The Kentucky-based band’s 2008 album, Evil Urges, threw fans and critics for a bit of a loop. While about half of its songs sound like typical MMJ fare, it also offered up left-field tracks like today’s SOTD, ‘Highly Suspicious.’

Song of the Day #4,397: ’75th Birthday Medley’ – Daniel Gallup

This tribute song and video was created by her very talented grandchildren, and is performed by one of them, my nephew Daniel Gallup, whose work I have featured here in the past. Daniel’s older sister Madison edited the video.

Song of the Day #4,396: ‘Talk Too Much’ – Coin

Fiona is a fan of songs much more than albums or even artists. Most of the tracks I’m featuring over these two weeks are the only songs she likes from the represented performers.

She says she often dives into the rest of an artist’s catalog after coming across a song she likes and usually comes away disappointed, or at least uninspired.

Song of the Day #4,395: ‘Headcase’ – Day Wave

Fiona has a soft spot for mellow, dreamy pop, and she shares with me a love of melancholy music. I’ve gotten her hooked on songs by Aimee Mann and Simon & Garfunkel, and she has returned the favor by digging up majestically sad gems like this one.

Day Wave is a project by Oakland musician Jackson Phillip, who records solo and hires backing musicians for live shows. His debut album, The Day We Had, came out in 2017, following up on a couple of EP releases.
