Song of the Day #6,527: ‘Home to Us’ – Paul McCartney feat. Ringo Starr

Madonna isn’t the only legend with new music out after a long hiatus. Sir Paul McCartney, 83 years young, will drop his 21st studio album this July.

The Boys of Dungeon Lane, McCartney’s first album since 2020’s McCartney III, promises to be a nostalgic look back at his childhood memories of Liverpool. I’d never speculate that this will be the last McCartney album, but if it is, the subject matter is certainly appropriate.

Second single ‘Home to Us’ finds Paul teaming up with old bandmate Ringo Starr, trading verses in a way they never have before. It’s the closest thing we can get to a Beatles reunion in the year of our lord 2026.

Despite being a massive Beatles fan, I can’t claim to be very familiar with any of McCartney’s 20 solo albums. The magical alchemy of those four men together doesn’t carry over (for me, at least) to any of their solo work.

That said, I plan to give this record a listen. The voice might be strained and the melodies a far cry from those in his greatest work, but he’s still Paul Friggin’ McCartney.

[Pre-Chorus]
The place we used to live in you could say it wasn’t much
But it was home to us
And you could be forgiven if you thought that it was rough
But it was home to us
The roses in the yard began to wilt, and then they turned to dust
But it was home to us

[Chorus]
We didn’t worry where the road was going to take us to
There wasn’t time to make a fuss ’cause that was all we knew
The world around us wasn’t safe, the place was falling down
But it was my hometown
And it was home to us

[Verse]
The lady on the hill was drinking brandy
Eating caviar, the perfect host
My mum was in the kitchen washing dishеs in the sink
And then she burnt thе toast
The kids are in the alley playing ball until the sun goes down
But that was my hometown
And it was home to us

[Pre-Chorus]
We didn’t worry where the road was going to lead us to
There wasn’t time to make a fuss ’cause that was all we knew
The world around us wasn’t safe, the place was falling down
But that was my hometown (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
And it was all I knew
‘Cause it was home to us

[Chorus]
The place we used to play was in the middle of the street
But it was home to us
And when the skies were grey, it didn’t matter anyway
But it was home to us
The roses in the yard began to wilt, and then they turned to dust
But it was home to us
Yeah, it was home to us (Yeah, yeah)
Yeah, it was home to us
