Justin Bieber holds the #13 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Yukon,’ the second single from his seventh album, Swag. Opening single ‘Daisies’ debuted at #1 while this one has so far peaked at #13.
The slightly subdued success might be due to the song’s pitch shifting, which has the effect of making Bieber sound like a combination of his childhood self and one of the Chipmunks.
The vocal treatment has an unsettling, hypnotic effect I kind of like. That said, I might like the song even better with a more straightforward delivery, such as the one Bieber gave on his literally stripped-down Grammys performance.
‘Yukon’ and ‘Daisies’ are compelling, thoughtful lead singles, and have me curious to hear the rest of Swag. I probably owe Bieber’s whole discography a listen, as I haven’t paid much attention since his (admittedly great) childhood output.
