Continuing my countdown of the songs on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter…
#16. ‘Desert Eagle’
A sick bass line drives this minute-long track, layered with sweet harmonies. To say it leaves you wanting more is an understatement.
#15. ‘Blackbiird’
The more successful of the album’s two classic covers, this one finds Beyoncé delivering a faithful version of The Beatles’ masterpiece (so faithful that the vocals are laid over Paul McCartney’s original instrumental track). Beyoncé showcases a quartet of female Black country artists — Tanner Adell, Tiera Kennedy, Reyna Roberts, and Brittney Spencer — using her platform to elevate others.
#14. ‘Just For Fun’
Speaking of elevating new voices, this track is one of several duets on the album, and the one with the littlest-known collaborator. Willie Jones is a Louisiana country artist who was featured on a season of The X-Factor, a far cry from a starring slot on a Beyoncé album. This is a somber but hopeful ode to resilience.
I’m goin’ all out just for fun, I am the man, I know it
And everywhere I go, they know my name
So I laugh and I lie and the coyotes cry
And, uh, time moves quickly and so do I, so do I
So I’ll say my goodbye
[Pre-Chorus: Beyoncé]
‘Cause time heals everything
I don’t need anything
Hallelujah
I pray to her
[Chorus: Beyoncé]
Here’s to hoping I’ll fall fast asleep tonight
And I’ll just need to get through this
Born in the darkness, who brings the light?
And I just, I need to get through this
Or just get used to it
[Verse 2: Willie Jones, Beyoncé, Beyoncé & Willie Jones]
I’m goin’ down south just for fun, I am the man, I know it
And everywhere I go, I hide my face
From the cowboys in Clovis and the rodeo circus
I came here for a reason, but I don’t know the purpose
It’s all under the surface
[Pre-Chorus: Beyoncé & Willie Jones]
But time heals everything
I don’t need anything
Hallelujah
I pray to her
[Chorus: Beyoncé]
Here’s to hoping I’ll fall fast asleep tonight
And I’ll just need to get through this
Born in the darkness, who brings the light?
And I just, I need to get through this
Or just get used to it
[Outro: Beyoncé]
‘Cause time heals everything
I don’t need anything
Hallelujah
I pray to her
I pray to her
I love it when famous artists shine a light on and share the spotlight with lesser or unknown talented artists.
I was actually hoping for a more inventive take on Blackbird but hearing that’s the original instrumental certainly makes sense.
