Song of the Day #5,436: ‘You’re My Best Friend’ – Queen

Continuing my look at the albums of 1975…

Sometimes a band just isn’t for me. Despite critical acclaim and fan worship, I simply can’t get on board. Exhibit A: Queen.

I certainly appreciate the British rock band’s innovation, and its influence on other bands and popular music in general. I’m just not a big fan of the music.

A Night at the Opera was Queen’s breakthrough album, reaching #1 in the UK and the top five in the U.S., both firsts. It is considered Queen’s best record by many fans and critics.

Given that status, I figured the album would be home to some of the band’s biggest hits. That’s not the case, though it does include the band’s best-known track, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ I like the first half of that song, before all the operatic flourishes.

The rest of the album skips around between genres — some hard rock here, some dixieland there. It all feels quirky for the sake of quirkiness, something that turns me off about Queen’s music in general.

I do like today’s, SOTD, the album’s second single. It was written by the band’s bassist, John Deacon, for his wife.

[Chorus]
Ooh, you make me live
Whatever this world can give to me
It’s you, you’re all I see
Ooh, you make me live now, honey
Ooh, you make me live

[Verse 1]
Oh, you’re the best friend that I ever had
Been with you such a long time
You’re my sunshine
And I want you to know
That my feelings are true
I really love you

[Refrain]
(Ooh) Oh, you’re my best friend

[Chorus]
Ooh, you make me live

[Verse 2]
Ooh, I’ve been wandering round (Round)
But still come back to you
(Ooh, still come back to you)
In rain or shine, you’ve stood by me girl (Girl)
I’m happy at home
(I’m happy, happy at home)

[Refrain]
You’re my best friend

[Chorus]
Ooh, you make me live
Whenever this world is cruel to me
I got you to help me forgive
Ooh, you make me live now, honey
Ooh, you make me live

[Verse 3]
Oh, you’re the first one
When things turn out bad
You know I’ll never be lonely
You’re my only one
And I love the things
I really love the things that you do

[Refrain]
Oh, you’re my best friend (Oh)

[Guitar Solo]

[Chorus]
Ooh, you make me live
(Live, live, live)
I’m happy at home
[Refrain]
You’re my best friend
Oh, you’re my best friend

[Outro]
Ooh, you make me live, ooh
Ooh, you’re my best friend

  1. Dana Gallup says:

You only like the first half of “Bohemian Rhapsody?” That’s some classic rock blasphemy right there!

I can’t say I’m familiar with the deeper cuts of Night at the Opera, but I really like to love a number of other Queen songs. Heck, we were all just rocking out to “Flat Bottom Girls” during last night’s Ted Lasso episode.

Years ago, I had either bought or put together a compilation of Queen’s Greatest Hits and thoroughly enjoyed every one of those songs.
