Song of the Day #5,392: ‘Revolution 9’ – The Beatles

I guess the Random iTunes Fairy is in a mischievous mood this weekend.

Out of more than 200 songs by the greatest rock band of all time, she has chosen to offer up The Beatles’ worst recording: ‘Revolution 9.’

To be fair, this is the 19th Beatles song to appear on a Random Weekend. I guess the l (bad) luck of the draw was going to settle on this one eventually.

This experimental soundscape, which appeared on 1968’s The Beatles (or “The White Album,” as most people call it), runs more than eight minutes, making it the longest track the band ever released.

This is the sort of thing you hear in the back room of a modern art museum, and indeed John Lennon was inspired by Yoko Ono’s avant-garde work when creating it.

Apparently Paul McCartney was out of the country when the song was recorded and didn’t want it included on the album. Smart man, that Paul McCartney.

Poor Paul lol I would not have been a happy camper about this one.

I was momentarily excited and ready to compliment the iTunes Fairy when I thought she had selected “Revolution,” but alas….
