Song of the Day #5,363: ‘This Is How We Do’ – Katy Perry

Today’s track is the fifth and final single from Katy Perry’s 2013 album Prism. It made it to #24 on the Billboard Hot 100, lower than the previous four (which included two #1 hits) but respectable nonetheless.

Prism was a bona fide smash, and the third straight Perry album to go multi-platinum. It was also, at least for now, the last major success of her career. She hasn’t had a song reach #1 since this album’s ‘Roar’ and ‘Dark Horse.’

Though her album sales have dropped off, Perry has managed to keep a high profile. Her 2015 Super Bowl halftime show remains the most-watched in the game’s history, and she landed a high-paying gig as a judge on American Idol in 2018.

She is also the most-followed woman on Twitter and fourth overall behind Barack Obama, Elon Musk, and Justin Bieber. Not sure I believe that Elon Musk stat.

[Verse 1]
Sipping on Rosé
Silver Lake sun coming up all lazy (This is how we do)
Slow cooking pancakes for my boy
Still up, still fresh as a daisy (Oh-oh)
Playing ping pong all night long
Everything’s all neon and hazy (This is how we do)
Chanel this, Chanel that, hell yeah
All my girls vintage Chanel, baby (Oh-oh)

[Pre-Chorus]
It’s no big deal
It’s no big deal
It’s no big deal
This is no big deal

[Chorus]
This is how we do, yeah
Chilling, laid-back, straight stunting, yeah, we do it like that
This is how we do, do-do-do-do
This is how we do
This is how we do, yeah
Chilling, laid-back, straight stunting, yeah, we do it like that
This is how we do, do-do-do-do
This is how we do (Oh-oh)

[Verse 2]
Big hoops and maroon lips
My clique hopping in my Maserati (This is how we)
Santa Barbara-chic at La Super Rica
Grabbing tacos, checking out hotties (Oh-oh)
Now we talkin’ astrology
Getting our nails did all Japanese-y (This is how we do)
Day drinking at the Wildcat
Sucking real bad at Mariah Carey-oke (Oh-oh)

[Pre-Chorus]
It’s no big deal
It’s no big deal (Uh-uh)
It’s no big deal
This is no big deal

[Chorus]
This is how we do, yeah
Chilling, laid-back, straight stunting, yeah, we do it like that
This is how we do, do-do-do-do
This is how we do
This is how we do, yeah
Chilling, laid-back, straight stunting, yeah, we do it like that
This is how we do, do-do-do-do
This is how we do

[Bridge]
Yo, this one goes out to the ladies at breakfast, in last night’s dress
Uh-huh, I see you (It’s how we do, straight stunting like that, uh-huh)
Yo, this goes out to all you kids that still have their cars at the club valet
And it’s Tuesday (It’s how we do, straight stunting like that, uh-huh)
Yo, shoutout to all you kids buying bottle service with your rent money
Respect! (It’s how we do, straight, yeah)

[Chorus]
This is how we do, yeah
Chilling, laid-back, straight stunting, yeah, we do it like that
This is how we do, do-do-do-do
This is how we do
This is how we do, yeah
Chilling, laid-back, straight stunting, yeah, we do it like that
This is how we do, do-do-do-do (Hey, oh)
This is how we do (Woo!)

[Breakdown]
(This is how we do)
This goes out to all you people going to bed with a ten and waking up with a two
(This is how we do)
(It’s how we do, straight stunting like that, uh-huh) Ha, not me

[Chorus]
This is how we do, yeah
Chilling, laid-back, straight stunting, yeah, we do it like that
This is how we do, do-do-do-do (It’s how we do, straight stunting like that)
What? Wait
No, no, no, no, bring the beat back (Oh-oh)
That’s right
This is how we do
Uh-oh
This is how we do
Uh-oh

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I felt Perry’s earlier songs, like “I Kissed a Girl” and some of the hits from “Teenage Dream,” including that title track and “Last Friday Night” were more interesting and provocative than your average pop fare, but the songs on Prism were less so. It would be nice to see Perry’s music in the future become more mature and interesting, as has happened with her contemporaries like Taylor Swift and Carly Rae Jepsen.
