Song of the Day #5,349: ‘Après Moi’ – Regina Spektor

Here’s the second Random Weekend selection from Regina Spektor’s 2006 album Begin to Hope.

The last time she showed up, I remarked that the Random iTunes Fairy had a knack for picking the hits, as she surfaced ‘Fidelity,’ the only song from that album — or Spektor, period — to ever chart.

A little more than three years later, Spektor is back with a deep cut.

‘Après Moi’ is a song about civilian revolt against monarchies in which the Moscow-born singer-songwriter performs the third verse in Russian. How could this not have been a hit?

[Verse 1]
I must go on standing
You can’t break that which isn’t yours
I must go on standing
I’m not my own, it’s not my choice

[Chorus]
Be afraid of the lame, they’ll inherit your legs
Be afraid of the old, they’ll inherit your souls
Be afraid of the cold, they’ll inherit your blood
Après moi, le deluge
After me comes the flood

[Verse 2]
I must go on standing
You can’t break that which isn’t, isn’t yours, yours
I must go on standing
I’m not my own, it’s not my choice

[Chorus]
Be afraid of the lame, they’ll inherit your legs
Be afraid of the old, they’ll inherit your souls
Be afraid of the cold, they’ll inherit your blood
Après moi, le deluge
After me comes the flood
Be afraid of the lame, they’ll inherit your legs
Be afraid of the old, they’ll inherit your souls
Be afraid of the cold, they’ll inherit your blood
Après moi, le deluge
After me, flood

[Verse 3]

[Chorus]
Be afraid of the lame, they’ll inherit your legs
Be afraid of the old, they’ll inherit your souls
Be afraid of the cold, they’ll inherit your blood
Après moi, le deluge
After me comes the flood

[Verse 4]
I must go on standing
You can’t break that which isn’t yours
I must go on standing
I’m not my own, it’s not my choice

[Outro]
I, I must go on stan-stan-ding-dong
You can’t, can’t break that, that
Which isn’t, isn’t yours, yours
I, I must go on stan-stan-ding-dong
I’m not, not my own, own
It’s not, not my choice
