Song of the Day #5,307: ‘Spiritual’ – Katy Perry

Today’s random selection was a bonus track on Katy Perry’s 2013 album Prism. Prism, the singer-songwriter’s fourth studio album, was the follow-up to smash hit Teenage Dream.

While this album didn’t reach its predecessor’s heights, it did reach #1 in a half dozen countries and debuted in the top spot in the U.S., where it ultimately went 5X Platinum. At the time, Katy Perry was pretty much the biggest name in pop music.

‘Spiritual’ was co-written by John Mayer, Perry’s then-boyfriend. I wonder if it was a sign of the relationship’s health that she relegated it to bonus track status.

[Verse 1]
Lay me down at your altar, baby
I’m a slave to this love
Your electric lips have got me speaking in tongues
I have prayed for a power like you
To see deep down in my soul
Oh, you make me bloom like a flower, a desert rose

[Pre-Chorus]
Magical one, a mystery
All of your charms have worked on me
I will surrender myself
Holy hell and Heaven high
You have opened up my eyes
And I am finally healed

[Chorus]
This is spiritual, under your spell
Phenomenal, the way you make me feel
Like an angel, all aglow
Like a feather, you make me float

[Verse 2]
Flying high as a kite on your love
Lost in sweet ecstasy
Found a Nirvana finally

[Pre-Chorus]
Magical one, a mystery
All of your charms have worked on me
I will surrender myself
Holy hell and Heaven high
You have opened up my eyes
And I am finally healed

[Chorus]
This is spiritual, under your spell
Phenomenal, the way you make me feel
Like an angel, all aglow
Like a feather, you make me float

[Interlude]
You make me float
You make me float

[Chorus]
This is spiritual, under your spell
So phenomenal, the way you make me feel
Like an angel (Like an angel), all aglow (Oh)
Like a feather (Like a feather), you make me float

[Outro]
Oh, oh-oh
You make me float
Oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh, you make me float

  1. Amy says:

    I’d say she traded up.

  2. Dana Gallup says:

I don’t know this album beyond the hits, but I became bored by this song after about a minute so I would say bonus track status is about right.
