Song of the Day #5,124: ‘Kick’ – INXS

As I’ve already demonstrated, 1987 was a great year for iconic rock albums. I can’t wait to get to this year in my Decades series. Add INXS’ Kick to the list.

I could see any number of songs from this album making an impactful appearance in the next season of Strange Things. Start with the title track (and today’s SOTD), which has a propulsive chorus that could punctuate a scene of our plucky heroes fighting back against the dark forces of the Upside Down.

I could also see a place for ‘Devil Inside,’ which has an addictive groove and an appropriate allusion to the forces of evil battling the residents of Hawkins, Indiana, from within.

But my top pick from this album is the grand synth ballad ‘Never Tear Us Apart,’ which I could see hitting uninitiated Gen Z’ers with the force of a tidal wave. That song is due for a renaissance, and this show could prove the perfect vehicle.

[Spoken Intro]
Sometimes you kick
Sometimes you get kicked
Sometimes you kick

Yeah
Come on, come on, come on, come on, yeah

I look around, unsatisfied
At what they’re giving me
But then I think to myself
Is there someone else
Oh, who feels the same as me?
Do you feel the same, baby?
When my back is broken
When the mountain moves away
All the dreams and promises
That we give
We give away

Sometimes you kick
Sometimes you get kicked
Sometimes you kick
Sometimes you get kicked
Yeah

Oh oh oh

[Saxophone solo]
Ah ah ah

Sometimes you kick
Sometimes you get kicked, oh
Sometimes you kick
Sometimes you get kicked, baby

Look ahead
But don’t mix it up
Baby, look ahead
To better days and better ways
Make peace with flesh and blood
Make peace with your love
Nothing more I could ask of you
But in the end this is the truth
Oh
When my back is broken
When the mountain moves away
All the dreams and promises
Oh, that we give
We give away

Sometimes you kick
Sometimes you get kicked
Sometimes you kick
Sometimes you get kicked

Sometimes you kick
Sometimes you get kicked
Sometimes you kick, oh
Sometimes you get kicked

Sometimes you kick
Sometimes you get kicked, oh

Great album, though the title track, which was not released as a single and is probably one of the least known songs, would be an unlikely selection. I agree “Never Tear Us Apart” deserves a renaissance with the younger generation, but the truly mesmerizing song from this album (and from INXS overall) is the sensual “Need You Tonight.”

Ooohhhh… Yes, these songs would make for great scenes in the show. Love both your picks!
