It’s been a minute since Lizzo dropped new music, and three years since her last studio album, 2019’s Cuz I Love You. But a whole new summer of Lizzo is on the horizon, with the planned release of her fourth album, Special, a week from today.
Setting the table is the rapper-singer’s fourth Top Five single, ‘About Damn Time,’ which has been burning up TikTok for awhile. This is a disco-funk banger that instantly brightens any room — in other words, a typical Lizzo song.
‘About Damn Time’ has eight credited songwriters, including Lizzo herself. That says a lot about not just how songs are constructed these days, but about how credits are determined. I once read that plenty of Beatles songs would have five or six listed songwriters if they were being written today (you could add George, Ringo and George Martin to most tracks, for starters).
Whatever the process, this song sounds 100% like Lizzo, which is a great thing in my book.
It’s bad bitch o’clock, yeah, it’s thick-thirty
I’ve been through a lot, but I’m still flirty (Okay)
Is everybody back up in the buildin’?
It’s been a minute, tell me how you’re healin’
‘Cause I’m about to get into my feelings
How you feelin’? How you feel right now?
[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, I been so down and under pressure
I’m way too fine to be this stressed, yeah
Oh, I’m not the girl I was or used to be, uh
Bitch, I might be better
[Chorus]
Turn up the music, turn down the lights
I got a feelin’ I’m gon’ be alright
Okay (Okay), alright
It’s about damn time (Time)
Turn up the music, let’s celebrate (Alright)
I got a feelin’ I’m gon’ be okay
Okay (Okay), alright
It’s about damn time
[Verse 2]
In a minute, I’ma need a sentimental
Man or woman to pump me up
Feelin’ fussy, walkin’ in my Balenci-ussies
Tryna bring out the fabulous
‘Cause I give a fuck way too much
I’ma need like two shots in my cup
Wanna get up, wanna get down
Mm, that’s how I feel right now
[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, I been so down and under pressure
I’m way too fine to be this stressed, yeah
Oh, I’m not the girl I was or used to be, uh
Bitch, I might be better
[Chorus]
Turn up the music, turn down the lights
I got a feelin’ I’m gon’ be alright
Okay (Okay), alright
It’s about damn time (Time)
Turn up the music, let’s celebrate (Alright)
I got a feelin’ I’m gon’ be okay
Okay (Okay), alright
It’s about damn time
[Bridge]
Bitch
‘Cause, uh, you know what time it is, uh
I’m comin’ out tonight, I’m comin’ out tonight (Uh-huh)
I’m comin’ out tonight, I’m comin’ out tonight (Woo)
I’m comin’ out tonight, I’m comin’ out tonight
Okay (Okay), alright (Alright)
It’s about damn time
I’m comin’ out tonight (Let’s go), I’m comin’ out tonight (Comin’ out tonight)
I’m comin’ out tonight, I’m comin’ out tonight (Woo)
I’m comin’ out tonight, I’m comin’ out tonight (Comin’ out tonight)
Okay (Okay), alright
It’s about damn time (Oh)
[Outro]
Bitch
Yeah, yeah
It’s about damn time
I think the songwriting credits have gotten out of control. I’m a purist who feels that the credit should go to the person or persons who contributed to the melody or lyrics only – not to someone who then added a drumbeat, a sample, a vocal, etc.
Imagine if this trend was extended to movies. A film could have dozens of screenwriters if you included every actor who improvised or re-worked a line, or director or editor who cut or added a line, or a musician who added score to a scene, and so on.
Catchy tune. OMG those nails will take your eyes out 😱
