Song of the Day #4,860: ‘Appreciate’ – Paul McCartney

It’s funny how fast new music comes and goes. I remember buying and enjoying Paul McCartney’s 2013 album, New, his first collection of original material in six years. I played it a lot that year. I don’t think I’ve played it once since.

At the time, the album was hailed as McCartney’s best in years. I haven’t listened to much of his solo work, so you won’t get an argument from me. But even McCartney’s best album in years isn’t quite good enough to break into my regular rotation.

Not many albums make that cut, to be honest. I find my music listening (not counting what I do for the blog) generally focuses in on a few artists at a time. Currently, I’d say 95% of my casual listening is split between Miranda Lambert, Brandi Carlile, Lana Del Rey, and John Mayer.

I like that the blog pushes me to explore new albums, as I did on the Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and Madonna deep dives. I’ll give new releases a spin or two as well. But Paul McCartney’s New? It doesn’t stand a chance.

[Intro]
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)

[Verse 1]
Lift up your head and remember what your life is
Don’t have to give it all away
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)
When you’re left for dead in the middle of a crisis
You must appreciate the day
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)

[Verse 2]
There’s something there, but you’re frightened to invite it
Beware of pushing it away
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)
Show that you care, and be certain you don’t fight it
You must appreciate the day
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)

[Bridge]
She says you don’t give back what you take
She got evidence you don’t appreciate her love, oh yeah
She says it’s all a show and no-go
You drop everything, give back
Reciprocate her love

[Refrain]
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)

[Verse 3]
Lift up your head and remember what your life is
Don’t have to give it all away
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)
When you’re left for dead in the middle of a crisis
You must appreciate the day
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)

[Bridge]
She says you don’t give back what you take
She got evidence you don’t appreciate her love, oh yeah
She says it’s all a show and no-go
You drop everything, give back
Reciprocate her love

[Refrain]
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)

[Verse 4]
There’s something there, but you’re frightened to invite it
Beware of pushing it away
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)
Show that you care, and be certain you don’t fight it
You must appreciate the day
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)

[Outro]
(Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate
Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate
Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate
Appreciate, appreciate, appreciate)

Well, I don’t know if the rest of the album sounds like this, but if so, it’s pretty forgettable. Sounds more like a Madonna than McCartney song.

I agree that your blog really helps me to learn about artists that I probably would never seek out on my own. I also enjoy the deep dives on artists I know and don’t know.

Paul McCartney’s solo albums (since Wings) tend to feature a few good songs and a whole lot of filler. I figure if you take the 3 or 4 best songs from any 3 consecutive releases, you can make up a truly great album. May I suggest that with the upcoming three-part Peter Jackson documentary on The Beatles at the end of November, you might tie-in a deep dive on that band.
