Song of the Day #4,845: ‘Too Low For Zero’ – Elton John

Here’s the title track from Elton John’s 1983 album Too Low For Zero, a comeback record for him following a string of poorly received releases that spanned nearly a decade.

This album also marked a reunion with lyricist Bernie Taupin, who had been sidelined for other collaborators during that dry spell. There’s no question that Taupin is a crucial ingredient in Elton John’s best work.

Too Low For Zero earned platinum status thanks to hits ‘I’m Still Standing’ and ‘I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues’ and features a handful of tracks just as strong as those, including today’s SOTD.

Alas, this also proved to be the last John album worth owning for all but the most ardent completists. There’s a reason the 2019 biopic Rocketman ended with this release.

[Verse 1]
Six o’clock alarm
I get the wake up call
Let that sucker jingle-jangle
Ring right off the wall
I’m too low for zero
I’m too tired to work
Tied one on with a friend last night
And wound up losing my shirt

[Chorus 1]
I’m too low for zero
I’m on a losing streak
I got myself in a bad patch lately
I can’t seem to get much sleep
I’m too low for zero
I wind up counting sheep
Nothing seems to make much sense
It’s all just Greek to me

[Chorus 2]
You know I’m too low, too low, too low for zero
You know I’m too low, too low, too low for zero

[Verse 2]
Cutting out cups of coffee
Switching off the late night news
Putting the cat out two hours early
It isn’t any use
I’m too low for zero
Insomnia attacks
Watching flies with my eyes till sunrise
It’s daylight when I hit the sack

[Chorus 1]
I’m too low for zero
I’m on a losing streak
I got myself in a bad patch lately
I can’t seem to get much sleep
I’m too low for zero
I wind up counting sheep
Nothing seems to make much sense
It’s all just Greek to me

[Chorus 2]
Cutting out cups of coffee
Switching off the late night news
Putting the cat out two hours early
It isn’t any use
I’m too low for zero
Insomnia attacks
Watching flies with my eyes till sunrise
It’s daylight when I hit the sack

[Chorus 1]
I’m too low for zero
I’m on a losing streak
I got myself in a bad patch lately
I can’t seem to get much sleep
I’m too low for zero
I wind up counting sheep
Nothing seems to make much sense
It’s all just Greek to me

[Chorus 2]
Cutting out cups of coffee
Switching off the late night news
Putting the cat out two hours early
It isn’t any use
I’m too low for zero
Insomnia attacks
Watching flies with my eyes till sunrise
It’s daylight when I hit the sack

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I agree this was probably Elton’s last great album, although I did like his collaboration with Leon Russell.
