Counting down my favorite songs from the new John Mayer album, Sob Rock…
#4. ‘I Guess I Just Feel Like’
John Mayer can be a snarky, obnoxious son of a bitch in interviews, but he’s earnest as hell in song. I don’t know which of those is an act, or more likely, if they’re flip sides of the same coin.
‘I Guess I Just Feel Like’ is one of several songs on Sob Rock that is deeply mournful but ultimately hopeful. While the others concern matters of the heart, this one describes a more general malaise.
While this song was first released in early 2019, lines about a “world that’s gone mad” make it a perfect fit for 2020.
Mayer delivers one of his finest performances on the album here, both vocally and musically. Slipping into his falsetto on the final lines, he really sells the emotion, and the two guitar solos are sublime.
I guess I just feel like
I guess I just feel like
Nobody’s honest, nobody’s true
Everyone’s lyin’ to make it on through
I guess I just feel like I’m the same way too
[Interlude]
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
[Verse 2]
I guess I just feel like good things are gone
And the weight of my worries is too much to take on
I think I remember the dream that I had
That love’s gonna save us from a world that’s gone mad
I guess I just feel like
What happened to that?
[Instrumental Break]
[Verse 3]
I guess I just feel like the joke’s gettin’ old
And the future is fading and the past is on hold
But I know that I’m open and I know that I’m free
And I’ll always let hope in wherever I’ll be
And if I go blind, I’d still find my way
I guess I just felt like givin’ up today
I don’t find this song to be particularly special or interesting. The guitar solos are nice, but not spectacular, and the songwriting both lyrically and musically is pedestrian and boring.
I hope Daniel will be along soon to set you straight!
I remember the roll out of this song like it was yesterday. Mayer debuted it acoustically at his IHeartRadio performance and all his fans went crazy (myself included). I played that video on repeat and eagerly awaited the studio version. Needless to say the studio version did not disappoint.
Mayer is at his best when he’s contemplating the world and his place in it. The beautiful instrumentation and production of this track is paired perfectly with the introspective lyrics. This song perfectly can meet my mood whether I’m down and in need of an uplifting boost or in a relaxed mood and looking to vibe out. The guitar solos are top tier, the perfect combo of blues and pop with immaculate tone. When I heard this song it was the first indication that Mayer would not disappoint with this album and it’s inclusion almost feels like a victory lap in the context of the rest of the track list.
Beautifully said Daniel and I don’t know anything about John Mayer ❤️
