Song of the Day #4,720: ‘Monday Morning’ – Fleetwood Mac

Has a lineup change ever had a more profound effect on a band than the addition of Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to Fleetwood Mac?

Before Buckingham and Nicks joined the band, Fleetwood Mac released ten albums over seven years, and most music fans wouldn’t recognize a single song from that span. Or at least not the Fleetwood Mac version — they did write and record ‘Black Magic Woman,’ which was a hit for Santana.

In the mid-70s, several band members departed, leaving original members John McVie and Mick Fleetwood (along with Christie McVie, who recorded with the band from the beginning and became an official member a few years later). Those three were joined by Buckingham and Nicks, and that quintet released five straight multi-platinum albums that define the Fleetwood Mac sound for most of us.

‘Monday Morning’ is the lead-off track on Fleetwood Mac, the 1975 album that kickstarted the band’s new lineup. This song, along with ‘Rhiannon’ and ‘Landslide,’ were intended for the next Buckingham/Nicks release but ended up here instead.

While the pop sound was a change from Fleetwood Mac’s original blues rock focus, the rest of the band reluctantly embraced the evolution. The rest, as they say, is history.

[Verse 1]
Monday morning, you sure look fine
Friday, I got travelin’ on my mind
First you love me, and then you fade away
I can’t go on believing this way
I got nothing but love for you
Tell me what you really want to do
First you love me, then you get on down the line

[Pre-Chorus]
But I don’t mind
I don’t mind, yeah

[Chorus]
I’ll be there if you want me to
No one else that could ever do
Got to get some peace in my mind

[Verse 2]
Monday morning, you sure look fine
Friday, I got travelin’ on my mind
First you love me, and then you say it’s wrong
You know I can’t go on believing for long
But you know it’s true (Yes)
You only want me when I get over you
First you love me, then you get on down the line

[Pre-Chorus]
But I don’t mind
No, I don’t mind, yeah

[Chorus]
I’ll be there if you want me to
No one else that could ever do
Got to get some peace in my mind

[Solo]

[Verse 3]
But you know it’s true
You know you only want me when I get over you
Oh, first you love me, then you get on down the line

[Pre-Chorus]
But I don’t mind
No, I don’t mind, yeah

[Chorus]
I’ll be there if you want me to
No one else that could ever do
Got to get some peace in my mind

  1. Dana Gallup says:

As always, great background information! I had no idea the band had released 10 albums before Nicks and Buckingham joined. And I certainly never knew they had written “Black Magic Woman.”
