Another favorite song entry from Madison, ‘Saturdays’ is a 2018 release by Twin Shadow, the stage name of singer-songwriter George Lewis Jr.
This song appeared on the soundtrack of the Netflix film Someone Great as well as on Twin Shadow’s most recent album, Caer. I’m not sure if Madison first heard this in the movie, but if so, it’s yet another favorite song with a tie to a movie. There’s definitely something to that connection.
I freakin’ love this song. It has an addictive 80s vibe, like a young Black man channeling ‘Dancing in the Dark’ Bruce Springsteen. And then HAIM show up to really class up the joint.
I totally see why this is a favorite of Madison’s, and I can’t wait to play it for my family on our next car ride.

Yay! So glad you enjoy it too 🙂 I actually came across this one a little before I heard it in that movie. I believe it just came up in my apple music radio or new music explore. I can’t remember exactly, but I instantly fell in love with it and listened to a bunch of Twin Shadow’s music. It’s a no skip for me and it always puts me in a better mood.

I’ve heard this song in the background when Maddie is home and playing music, but she hasn’t (yet!) put it on any of her wonderful playlists she makes me, so this was the first time I gave it a proper listen. I, too, immediately found it a delightful listen, though I admit I’m still working my way through the lyrics (especially after watching the video 😜)
One thing we were discussing while creating and finalizing our lists is how the passage of time and being older impacts one’s choices. For Amy and I (and you), we have to consider whether a song that was a favorite in our teens, twenties or thirties still ranks today as a favorite and whether a more recent favorite should be elevated or downgraded because it may not remain as big a favorite ten or twenty years from now. Maddie and Daniel don’t have quite that same dilemma, though I’m sure even Maddie had to consider whether a newer song like this one should be prioritized over others she loved as a kid or teenager, whether that might be some song from High School Musical or a Billy Joel or Paul Simon song she inherited and absorbed from us.
For me, early versions of my list included songs my younger self loved such as “Need You Tonight” by INXS, “Kissing Well” by Terence Trent Darby and “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel. The list also included some (relatively) more recent songs like “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse, “Raise your Glass” by Pink, “New Rules” by Dua Lipa, “Havana” by Camila Cabello, “Don’t” by Ed Sheeran and “No” or “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor.
In the end, I just had to base my decisions on whether older songs still spoke to me in the same way decades later and whether I believed newer songs would still speak to me decades from now. I assume that is what we all did as well, to a greater or lesser extent based on our age, including Maddie with this choice.
So it will be interesting to see whether this song remains a top 25 favorite for Maddie ten, twenty, thirty years from now. She’ll have to let us know.😜
Yeah, I definitely leaned that way myself. Only six of my 25 were released in the last 20 years, though my affection for a few of the early ones is pretty recent. It’s hard to remove staying power and nostalgia from the mix when those are such powerful ingredients in why we like the things we like.
Yes, I definitely had that struggle. Songs such as “Beautiful Trauma” by Pink or “Someday” by Rob Thomas are absolute favorites in recent years, but… will I still be as enamored with them down the road? Does/should it matter? Not to mention my true list contains several Daniel Gallup originals, which I opted to exclude with an anti-nepotism policy. (Otherwise, “Lovely Morning” and “Start of Something New” would have likely kicked a couple of other songs out😜)
This question was the trickiest part of making my list, and it’s the reason I still am unsure that my final product isn’t one I could make a bunch of changes too. There are songs on my list that I know would stay no matter what, and some like this song which I just find infectious and took a gamble on.
But, in truth, I was even going back and forth on whether this should be the Twin Shadow song I included. I gave it the edge because it was my introduction to the artist and had significance and history that way, even though the song “Brace” has been a more recent favorite. So we’ll definitely see how time would change this list (a month from now if not 5 years lol).
I also won’t attempt to explain anything about these music videos, I didn’t see them until quite some time after my exposure to the songs. :p
Nice beat weird video. I can certainly dance to this and I’m sure riding in a car while listening to it would be good too. Just be careful of speeding 😊
