We the Kings is a band from, of all places, Bradenton, Florida. This is a Sophia find that I probably should have encountered earlier.
The band’s self-titled debut came out in 2007 and they have released seven more albums since then. Today’s song, their biggest hit, sold more than a quarter million copies back in 2007. It, and they, totally missed my radar.
I get a 90s alternative vibe from these guys, and indeed, AllMusic.com lists blink-182 and Weezer among their influences.
For a couple of years in the early 2010s, the band released a series of short YouTube skits under the title ‘The King’s Carriage’ which depicted a humorous glimpse at life on the road.
Check yes, Juliet, are you with me?
Rain is falling down on the sidewalk
I won’t go until you come outside
Check yes, Juliet, kill the limbo
I’ll keep tossing rocks at your window
There’s no turning back for us tonight
[Pre-Chorus]
Lace up your shoes (Ayo, ayo)
Here’s how we do
[Chorus]
Run, baby run, don’t ever look back
They’ll tear us apart if you give them the chance (Give them the chance)
Don’t sell your heart, don’t say we’re not meant to be
Run, baby run, forever we’ll be
You and me
[Verse 2]
Check yes, Juliet, I’ll be waiting
Wishing, wanting yours for the taking
Just sneak out and don’t tell a soul goodbye
Check yes, Juliet, here’s the countdown:
3, 2, 1, now fall in my arms now
They can change the locks, don’t let them change your mind
[Pre-Chorus]
Lace up your shoes (Ayo, ayo)
Here’s how we do
[Chorus]
Run baby run, don’t ever look back
They’ll tear us apart if you give them the chance (Give them the chance)
Don’t sell your heart, don’t say we’re not meant to be
Run baby run, forever we’ll be
You and me
[Bridge]
We’re flying through the night, we’re flying through the night
Way up high
The view from here is getting better with you by my side
[Chorus]
Run baby run, don’t ever look back
They’ll tear us apart if you give them the chance
Don’t sell your heart, don’t say we’re not meant to be
Run baby run, forever we’ll be
Run baby run, don’t ever look back
They’ll tear us apart if you give them the chance (Give them the chance)
Don’t sell your heart, don’t say we’re not meant to be
Run baby run, forever we’ll be
You and me
[Outro]
You and me
You and me
This may be your biggest commercial radio blind spot since “I’ve Got a Feeling!” If you had been doing your occasional review of Billboard back then, you absolutely would have known of this song and band.
Like the video and the music. Am reminded of the The Graduate ending. Or a modern day Romeo and Juliet ❤️
