My family’s road trip to the North Carolina mountains gave us plenty of time for music. We had 22 hours of drive-time for the round trip, plus another 12 or so driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway and through Asheville and its surrounding areas.
To prepare us for these many hours in the car, each family member contributed to a master playlist which we played on shuffle. The playlist totaled around 26 hours, so we had few repeats over the course of the week. It also provided the endless excitement of guessing whose song would play next each time the current song ended.
Over the course of this trip, I realized that my two daughters have gotten very good at discovering new songs and bands. I wish I’d had access to a vast library of free music when I was their age. I’d probably be an even bigger music fan than I am now.
Over the next month, I’ll feature some of the songs my daughters added to our family’s Asheville playlist.
First, two weeks worth of songs picked by my younger daughter, Fiona, starting with today’s selection by Neon Trees.
Neon Trees is a Utah-based band whose first studio release came out in 2010. Like many of the songs Fiona likes, this is alternative pop with a killer chorus. Unlike most of her picks, this one had some chart success, reaching #13 on Billboard’s Hot 100. It was also performed on Glee, where Fiona first heard it.
Here we go again
I kinda wanna be more than friends
So take it easy on me
I’m afraid you’re never satisfied
Here we go again
We’re sick like animals
We play pretend
You’re just a cannibal
And I’m afraid I won’t get out alive
No, I won’t sleep tonight
[Chorus]
Oh, oh
I want some more
Oh, oh
What are you waiting for
Take a bite of my heart tonight
Oh, oh
I want some more
Oh, oh
What are you waiting for
What are you waiting for
Say goodbye to my heart tonight
[Verse 2]
Here we are again
I feel the chemicals kickin’ in
It’s getting heavy
And I wanna run and hide
I wanna run and hide
I do it every time
You’re killin’ me now
And I won’t be denied by you
The animal inside of you
[Chorus]
Oh, oh
I want some more
Oh, oh
What are you waiting for
Take a bite of my heart tonight
Oh, oh
I want some more
Oh, oh
What are you waiting for
What are you waiting for
Say goodbye to my heart tonight
[Bridge]
Hush, hush the world is quiet
Hush, hush we both can’t fight it
It’s us that made this mess
Why can’t you understand?
Whoa, I won’t sleep tonight
Here we go again
Here we go again
Here we go again
Oh oh
I want some more
Oh oh
What are you waiting for
Take a bite of my heart tonight
Oh oh
I want some more
Oh oh
What are you waiting for
What are you waiting for
What are you waiting
Here we go again
Here we go again
Here we go again
Say goodbye to my heart tonight
Oh oh
I want some more
Oh oh
What are you waiting for
What are you waiting for
Say goodbye to my heart tonight
26 hours? Your family may have set the record for the longest playlist ever. I’m curious if there were any rules such as not picking a song or artist known or assumed not to be liked by another family member. That’s one of our rules when compiling a road trip playlist for our family vacations.
Yes, that is one of our rules as well. There’s also a soft rule not to pick any songs of excessive length (‘Tiny Dancer’ at 6:17 was the longest).
Great beat Fiona! Must be a good song to dance to and for driving as well 😊
