Song of the Day #4,346: ‘Let the Day Begin’ – The Call

The Call’s lead singer and songwriter Michael Been considered 1987’s Into the Woods the band’s best album, but it was the follow-up, 1989’s Let the Day Begin, that became their biggest hit.

Both albums are available on streaming services and worth checking out.

The title track of Let the Day Begin made it all the way to #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart and #51 on the Hot 100.

It was ten years later that the song got its most high-profile exposure, when Vice President Al Gore chose it as the theme song for his presidential campaign. I distinctly remember Bill Clinton’s use of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Don’t Stop’ eight years earlier, but I don’t recall Gore playing this song.

Maybe if butterfly ballots and hanging chads hadn’t thrown the election to George W. Bush, a Gore presidency would have thrown a bigger spotlight on The Call.

Here’s to the babies in a brand new world
Here’s to the beauty of the stars
Here’s to the travellers on the open road
Here’s to the dreamers in the bars

Here’s to the teachers in the crowded rooms
Here’s to the workers in the fields
Here’s to the preachers of the sacred words
Here’s to the drivers at the wheel

[Chorus]
Here’s to you my little loves with blessings from above
Now let the day begin
Here’s to you my little loves with blessings from above
Now let the day begin, let the day begin

Here’s to the winners of the human race
Here’s to the losers in the game
Here’s to the soldiers of the bitter war
Here’s to the wall that bears their names

[Chorus]
Here’s to you my little loves with blessings from above
Now let the day begin
Here’s to you my little loves with blessings from above
Let the day begin, let the day begin, let the day start

Here’s to the doctors and their healing work
Here’s to the loved ones in their care
Here’s to the strangers on the streets tonight
Here’s to the lonely everywhere

Here’s to the wisdom from the mouths of babes
Here’s to the lions in the cage
Here’s to the struggles of the silent poor
Here’s to the closing of the age

[Chorus]
Here’s to you my little loves with blessings from above
Now let the day begin
Oh, Here’s to you my little loves with blessings from above
Let the day begin

Here’s to you my little loves with blessings from above
Let the day begin
Here’s to you my little loves with blessings from above
Now let the day begin, let the day begin, let the day start

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Exit polling during the 2000 election showed that Gore’s use of this song drove older Jewish voters in Palm Beach county to vote for Pat Buchanan. I blame The Call for everything that followed.
