It’s been eight years since the last Wallflowers album, 2012’s Glad All Over. The band hasn’t broken up, per se, but frontman Jakob Dylan remains the only original member, as various other musicians have cycled in and out of the lineup.
Essentially, The Wallflowers is a vehicle for the songs Dylan (the sole songwriter) deems appropriate for the full band treatment. Contrast their work to Dylan’s two solo albums, which were entirely acoustic affairs.
I’m a big fan of three Wallflowers albums (Bringing Down the Horse, Breach, and Rebel, Sweetheart) but the other three failed to grab me. That’s particularly true of Glad Over All, which dropped after a 7-year hiatus. Lots of anticipation that ended with a “meh.”
That said, I consider Dylan a very talented songwriter and performer, and I look forward to whatever he comes up with next.
They don’t begin with the letter I
They don’t include pity revisions of lies
They don’t end with asking me why
It’s not like the movies are
Where they hand you a set of lines
There are no excuses do-overs in life
There’s one chance for getting it right
Just say it won’t
It won’t be long
Till we’re not
Wrong anymore
Have you not learned a thing at all
Have you not grown a little wise
Say something’s working in the back of your mind
Something worthy of taking its time
The message it has been sent
There’s no more roses on this vine
I’ve given you everything you’ve got
And a little more than a sign
So say it won’t
It won’t be long
Till we’re not
Wrong anymore
Say it won’t
It won’t be long
Till we’re not
Wrong anymore
No you don’t
Have to make sense
But it’s good
It’s good to be clear
Are you thinking
Are thinking of something
Speak up be aware
You’re not the only one that’s got my ear
Just say that it won’t
It won’t be long
Till we’re not
We’re not wrong anymore
Just say that it won’t
It won’t be long
Till we’re not
We’re not wrong anymore
You said the words I wanna hear
They don’t begin with the letter I
I actually didn’t know he/they had released so many albums. I am only familiar with Breach, and, even then, not the whole album.
