Song of the Day #4,298: ‘Motorbreath’ – Metallica

I’ve written about a couple of important 1983 debuts already, so I guess I’d be remiss to leave out this one. Heavy metal pioneers Metallica released Kill ‘Em All this year, kicking off a career that would result in more than 125 million album sales.

Metallica is considered one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal bands of all time, which to me means exactly nothing. This is the genre for which I have the least affection or understanding.

One reason I wanted to include this album is the hilarious fact that the band initially wanted to title the record Metal Up Your Ass before being rebuffed by their label.

This is Spinal Tap came out a year later, and I can’t help but think that anecdote was at least a partial inspiration for the Smell the Glove album cover being replaced by a completely black image.

[Verse 1]
Living and dying, laughing and crying
Once you have seen it, you’ll never be the same
Life in the fast lane is just how it seems
Hard and it’s heavy, dirty and mean

[Chorus]
Motorbreath, it’s how I live my life
I can’t take it any other way
Motorbreath, the sign of living fast
It is going to take your breath away

[Verse 2]
Don’t stop for nothing, it’s full speed or nothing
I am taking down you know whatever is in my way
Getting your kicks as you are shooting the line
Sending the shivers up and down my spine

[Chorus]
Motorbreath, it’s how I live my life
I can’t take it any other way
Motorbreath, the sign of living fast
It is going to take your breath away

[Verse 3]
Those people who tell you not to take chances
They are all missing on what life’s about
You only live once, so take hold of the chance
Don’t end up like others, the same song and dance

[Chorus]
Motorbreath, it’s how I live my life
I can’t take it any other way
Motorbreath, the sign of living fast
It is going to take your breath away

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I really think of Metallica as a 90’s band. Then again, I’ve tried to pay as little attention to Metallica as possible. I like my metal far less heavy than this.
