Song of the Day #4,265: ‘The Flirting Kind’ – Elvis Costello

This Elvis Costello track shows up on one of the reissues of his 1983 album Punch the Clock.

It’s a testament to the depth of Costello’s catalog that a song this good can end up as a forgotten B-side, and also that after months of Costello Weekends, plenty of Random Weekend appearances, and a bunch of other Song of the Day posts, I still have to much great material of his to mine.

On the liner notes of the Punch the Clock reissue, Costello expressed his regrets for not including this track on the album’s official tracklist.

He had this to say about its writing and production:

‘Flirting Kind’ was originally written in the same time and idiom as ‘Kid About It’ (from Imperial Bedroom). There was more than a tip of the hat to Burt Bacharach in my demo. However the mania for “pace” which infected some of our wrong-headed choices led to this pretty but less tragic version. Nevertheless we put quite a lot of time into the arrangement. Somehow it just doesn’t really fit the song.

[Note: Happy Anniversary to my wife, whose flirting nearly three decades back resulted in our courtship, engagement and marriage 23 years ago today!]

[Verse 1]
She used to be the flirting kind
But the boy loved her anyway
He made up his mind

[Chorus 1]
She said, what’s a girl to do to be content?
Use your imagination
Time to experiment
Make love like a punishment
So they call her the flirting kind
The flirting kind

[Verse 2]
You better stop
Stop your running round
I got everything I wanted
I could make up for lost ground

[Chorus 2]
With the flirting kind
The flirting kind
Your love is best
But I’ll leave like the rest
Just a flirting kind[x3]

[Bridge]
They say that her fate is sealed
But she’s much too beautiful to ever yield

[Chorus 1]

[Verse 3]
She’s crying in her sleep
For a man tone deaf
So is a man all over
He’s all over, all over town

[Chorus 2]

[Outro][x5]
Just a flirting kind

Look at the Random ITunes Fairy picking an appropriate song for your anniversary. Happy anniversary!
