Song of the Day #4,264: ‘Crystal Ball’ – Pink

I started listening to Pink sometime in the late 2000s, when her latest album Funhouse was charting well and receiving a lot of critical acclaim.

I also enjoyed her next album, 2012’s The Truth About Love, but after that I stopped keeping up with her releases. She has dropped two studio albums since then that struggled to find an audience. Last year’s Hurts 2B Human hasn’t even cracked 100,000 U.S. sales, while most of her earlier releases were in the millions.

I don’t know if she hit a creative lull or if newcomers crowded her out. I imagine she has a comeback in her.

Today’s song is a standout track from Funhouse, an album that holds up very well more than a decade later.

[Verse 1]
Drinking wine and thinking bliss is on the other side of this
I just need a compass and a willing accomplice
All my doubts that fill my head cascading up and down again
Up and down and ’round again, down and up and down again
Oh, I’ve had my chances and I’ve taken them all
Just to end up right back here on the floor
To end up right back here on the floor

[Chorus 1]
Pennies in a well, a million dollars in the fountain of a hotel
Fortune teller that says maybe you will go to hell
But I’m not scared at all, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
Of the cracks in the crystal, the cracks in the crystal ball

[Verse 2]
Sometimes you think everything is wrapped inside a diamond ring
Love just needs a witness and a little forgiveness
And a halo of patience and a less sporadic pace and
I’m learning to be brave in my beautiful mistakes
Oh, I’ve felt that fire and I have been burned
But I wouldn’t trade the pain for what I’ve learned
I wouldn’t trade the pain for what I’ve learned

[Chorus 1]
Pennies in a well, a million dollars in the fountain of a hotel
Fortune teller that says maybe you will go to hell
But I’m not scared at all, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
Of the cracks in the crystal, the cracks in the crystal ball

[Bridge]
Irony, irony, this hate and love, hate and love
What it does to me, what it’s done to me
What is done, done

[Chorus 2]
Pennies in a well, a million dollars in the fountain of a hotel
Broken mirrors and a black cat’s cold stare
Walk under ladders on my way to hell, I’ll meet you there
But I’m not scared at all, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
No, I’m not scared at all
Of the cracks in the crystal, the cracks in the crystal ball

How exactly did you miss her comeback in 2017? Her album Beautiful Trauma was huge, as were the two singles, “What About Us” and the title track produced by Jack Antonoff. Amy was obsessed with the song “Beautiful Trauma” for months.

She’s come back. You just somehow slept through it.😜

Pink is one of those artists I just adore though I don’t know that I’ve ever heard a single album of hers from start to finish. Mostly I love her from her live performances on awards shows and from the handful of songs that have made a big splash with me. I don’t know that I was “obsessed” with “Beautiful Trauma,” but I sure do love that song (and her performance on SNL that introduced me to it). I also love “Perfect,” which I came to know initially, like so many other pop songs of that era, through Glee. All I know is I want to be there for “comeback” tour, as I somehow missed her last two times around despite my ongoing “obsession.”
