Song of the Day #4,247: ‘Dance Monkey’ – Tones And I

Two songs I’ve previously featured show up at #3 and #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week: ‘Circles’ by Post Malone, and ‘Memories’ by Maroon 5. But #5 gives us a newcomer to the blog.

Tones And I is the stage name of Australian singer-songwriter Toni Watson, and her song ‘Dance Monkey’ has been on quite the tear. With 24 weeks at #1 on the Australian charts, it broke a record that stretched back 77 years to Bing Crosby’s recording of ‘White Christmas.’

She has broken records in the UK as well, where this song spent the most time of any by a female artist at the #1 spot, beating out Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ and Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella.’ In the U.S., the song is the first written entirely by a woman to appear in Billboard’s Top Five in more than eight years.

That’s quite the performance for a song that doesn’t strike me as very special, though Watson’s voice is certainly unique (Bjork-like in its squeakiness).

‘Dance Monkey’ is about Watson’s time as a busker, when passersby would push her to keep performing no matter how burned out she got. “If you replace the word ‘dance’ with ‘sing,'” she said, “it’s pretty self-explanatory.”

[Verse 1]
They say, “Oh my God, I see the way you shine
Take your hands, my dear, and place them both in mine”
You know you stopped me dead while I was passing by
And now I beg to see you dance just one more time

[Pre-Chorus]
Ooh, I see you, see you, see you every time
And oh my, I, I like your style
You, you make me, make me, make me wanna cry
And now I beg to see you dance just one more time

[Chorus]
So they say
Dance for me, dance for me, dance for me, oh-oh-oh
I’ve never seen anybody do the things you do before
They say
Move for me, move for me, move for me, ayy-ayy-ayy
And when you’re done, I’ll make you do it all again

[Verse 2]
I said, “Oh my God, I see you walking by
Take my hands, my dear, and look me in my eyes”
Just like a monkey, I’ve been dancin’ my whole life
But you just beg to see me dance just one more time

[Pre-Chorus]
Ooh, I see you, see you, see you every time
And oh my, I, I like your style
You, you make me, make me, make me wanna cry
And now I beg to see you dance just one more time

[Chorus]
So they say
Dance for me, dance for me, dance for me, oh-oh-oh
I’ve never seen anybody do the things you do before
They say
Move for me, move for me, move for me, ayy-ayy-ayy
And when you’re done, I’ll make you do it all again
They say
Dance for me, dance for me, dance for me, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
I’ve never seen anybody do the things you do before
They say
Move for me, move for me, move for me, ayy-ayy-ayy
And when you’re done, I’ll make you do it all again

[Bridge]
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh, ah-ah, ah-ah

[Chorus]
They say
Dance for me, dance for me, dance for me, oh-oh-oh
I’ve never seen anybody do the things you do before
They say
Move for me, move for me, move for me, ayy-ayy-ayy
And when you’re done, I’ll make you do it all again
They say
Dance for me, dance for me, dance for me, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
I’ve never seen anybody do the things you do before
They say
Move for me, move for me, move for me, ayy-ayy-ayy
And when you’re done, I’ll make you do it all again
All again

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Despite international record breaking success, this is the first I am hearing of this song or artist so, yeah, I’m way out of touch.

The song is certainly catchy and I like that it’s about her busking experience. The video is cute, but it might have been better to make it about busking.

I like her voice and the video
