Song of the Day #4,234: ‘Heaven’ – Elisabeth Moss

In a shameful move by the Academy, Lupita Nyong’o was snubbed in this year’s Best Actress race for her mesmerizing double turn in Jordan Peele’s Us. Less noticed, but equally unfortunate, was the absence of Nyong’O’s Us co-star Elisabeth Moss for her work as alt-rocker Becky Something in the film Her Smell.

Written and directed by Alex Ross Perry, Her Smell is told in five real-time segments over the course of several years in the life of the horribly self-destructive Becky. The first three scenes make Uncut Gems look like My Dinner With Andre, as a drug-fueled Becky rages at her bandmates, support team, and anybody else who gets in her way.

I’m not a big fan of this movie overall, largely because of its headache-inducing first half, but there is no denying Moss’ commitment to the role. Who would have thought Mad Men‘s Peggy Olson could be this convincing as a Courtney Love stand-in?

Her Smell settles down in its final two acts, after Becky enters rehab and tries to stage a comeback.

In this scene, one of my very favorite musical moments of the year, she is reunited with the daughter she had to give up because of her drug addiction. In an unbroken take, she plays a cover of Bryan Adams’ ‘Heaven’ for the little girl, turning the cheesy 80s ballad into something transcendent.

[Verse 1]
Oh, thinkin’ about our younger years
There was only you and me
We were young and wild and free
Now nothin’ can take you away from me
We’ve been down that road before
But that’s over now
You keep me comin’ back for more

[Chorus]
Baby, you’re all that I want
When you’re lyin’ here in my arms
I’m findin’ it hard to believe
We’re in Heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn’t too hard to see
We’re in Heaven

[Verse 2]
Oh, once in your life you find someone
Who will turn your world around
Bring you up when you’re feelin’ down
Yeah, nothin’ could change what you mean to me
Oh, there’s lots that I could say
But just hold me now
Cause our love will light the way

[Chorus]
And baby you’re all that I want
When you’re lyin’ here in my arms
I’m finding it hard to believe
We’re in Heaven
Yeah, love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn’t too hard to see
We’re in Heaven, yeah

[Bridge]
I’ve been waitin’ for so long
For somethin’ to arrive
For love to come along
Now our dreams are comin’ true
Through the good times and the bad
Yeah, I’ll be standin’ there by you

[Chorus]
And baby you’re all that I want
When you’re lyin’ here in my arms
I’m findin’ it hard to believe
We’re in Heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn’t too hard to see
We’re in Heaven, Heaven, woah

[Outro]
You’re all that I want
You’re all that I need

Having not watched Mad Men, my real entry point for Moss has been Handmaid’s Tale. She is excellent in that.

This film was completely off my radar, but your review has me intrigued- though I may need to keep the volume down for the first half of the movie.🥴

  2. Peg says:

I’m a big fan of hers however everything I read or heard about the first half kept me away. Not a fan of craziness like that. Love your comparison with Uncut Gems 🤣

  3. Amy says:

If you saw her performance of June in Handmaid’s Tale, you’d have no doubt of all the things she’s capable of… I don’t know that I’d like this film, but your post sure makes me eager for the next season of Handmaid’s Tale!
