Song of the Day #4,096: ‘Stay Up Late’ – Talking Heads

Here’s a fun track from Talking Heads 1985 album Little Creatures, the band’s most commercially successful effort. After the exploration of world music on 1980’s Remain in Light and 1983’s Speaking in Tongues, found its influences back in America.

Pop, funk and country sounds dominate a song cycle about relationships and Americana. Songs ‘And She Was,’ ‘The Lady Don’t Mind’ and ‘Road to Nowhere’ found modest success on the charts.

‘Stay Up Late’ is the only song I know that uses the phrase “little pee pee” in describing a baby’s genitalia, and probably the only song I know that describes a baby’s genitalia period. Gotta love David Byrne.

[Verse 1]
Mommy had a little baby
There he is, fast asleep
He’s just a little plaything
Why not wake him up?
Cute, cute little baby
Little pee pee, little toes
Now he’s comin’ to me
Crawl across the kitchen floor

[Chorus]
Baby, baby, please let me hold him
I wanna make him stay up all night
Sister, sister, he’s just a plaything
We wanna make him stay up all night
Yeah, we do

[Verse 2]
See him drink from a bottle
See him eat from a plate
Cute, cute as a button
Don’t you wanna make him stay up late?
And we’re having fun with no money
Little smile on his face
Don’t you love the little baby?
Don’t you want to make him stay up late?

[Chorus]
Baby, baby, please let me hold him
I wanna make him stay up all night
Sister, sister, he’s just a plaything
We wanna make him stay up all night

[Bridge]
Here we go (all night long)
Sister, sister (all night long)
In the playpen, woo! (all night long)
Little baby goes, ha! (all night long)
I know you want to leave me
Why don’t we pretend
There you go little man
Cute, cute, why not?
Late at night, wake him up

[Chorus]
Baby, baby, please let me hold him
I wanna make him stay up all night
Sister, sister, he’s just a plaything
We wanna make him stay up all night

[Outro]
Here we go, ha (all night long)
Sister, sister, woo! With the television on
Little baby goes, woo! (all night long)
Hey, hey, baby! (all night long)
And he looks so cute (all night long)
In his little red suit (all night long)
All night long
All night long
All night long
All night long

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Ah, this one brings me back. Our band in college, The Generics, played this song. So fun to sing! I don’t remember the video though, with the band dressed as sperm?

Much of this album is heavily influenced by the birth of a newborn, which I think was based on one of the band mates having a baby. “And She Was” is another great baby influenced song.

  2. I use to listen to this song all the time, as I had it on cassette in my car. It was good to hear again, it is a great song.
