Song of the Day #3,989: ‘I Care 4 U’ – Aaliyah

Another R&B blindspot for me, Aaliyah was a rising sensation when her life was tragically cut short in a plane crash in August of 2001. Just a month earlier, she had released her third album, a self-titled record that went on to sell 13 million copies worldwide.

While this isn’t my genre, I am very impressed by my first listen to this album. The songs sound great and have interesting twists and textures, and Aaliyah’s vocals are an appealing blend of sensuality and self-confidence.

While this was Aaliyah’s third album, and her seventh year as a recording artist, she was remarkably just 22 when she died. Her first album, Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number, was released when she was only 15 years old. The album title is extra creepy in light of the fact that the title song was written, and the album produced, by R. Kelly.

R. Kelly and Aaliyah were secretly married that same year, with her lying about her age to avoid the need for parental consent. The marriage was annulled shortly thereafter when he parents found out. R. Kelly, of course, went on to make such horrific behavior his trademark.

That unpleasantness didn’t derail Aaliyah’s career and she was on her way to superstardom when she met her unfortunate fate. Who knows what heights she would have reached had she missed that plane.

[Intro]
Mmm yeah..
Oh yeah oh..

[Verse 1]
Hey my baby
Why you lookin’ so down?
Seems like you need a lovin’
Baby you need a girl like me around
Hey my baby
Tell me why you cry
Here take my hand and (Yeah, mmm)
Wipe those tears from your eyes

[Chorus x2]
Can I talk to you
Comfort you
Let you know
I care for you

Can I talk to you
Comfort you
Let you know
I care for you

[Verse 2]
Hey sexy baby
Why’d your girl leave you in pain?
To let a fine man like you go
She must be insane
Hey sexy baby
There’s no need to worry
Oh boy if you call on me
I’ll come, I’ll come in a hurry

[Chorus]
Can I talk to you
Comfort you
Let you know
I care for you

Can I talk to you
Comfort you
Let you know
I care for you

[Bridge]
Hold on (Hold on)
Stay strong (Stay strong)
Press on (For me baby)
I care for you (I care for you)

Hold on (Hold on)
Stay strong (Stay strong)
Press on (For me baby)
I care for you (I care for you)

[Chorus]
Can I talk to you (I, I wanna talk)
Comfort you (I wanna hold you tight, baby)
Let you know (I wanna let you know that-)
I care for you (That I care, for you)
Can I talk to you

So sad to see such a talented person’s life end so young!
