Song of the Day #3,978: ‘Volcano’ – U2

U2’s 2014 album Songs of Innocence is best remembered as the record Apple uploaded for free to every iTunes user, a move Tim Cook described as “the largest album release of all time.”

It was also a move that revealed just how little relevance U2 had to the new generation, as the predominant reaction by millions of young people was “What the hell is a U2 and why is it on my phone all of a sudden?”

The controversy overshadowed the actual music on Songs of Innocence, not least because the songs weren’t very memorable. Today’s random track, ‘Volcano,’ is one of the better ones, and it’s not much better than fine. Nice bass line, though.

[Verse 1]
The world is spinning fast tonight
You can hurt yourself tryin to hold on
To what you used to be
I’m so glad the past is all gone

[Pre-Chorus]
Been out in the wild
Been out in the night
Been out of your mind
Do you live here or is this a vacation?

[Chorus]
Oh, volcano
You don’t wanna, you don’t wanna know
Volcano
Something in you wants to blow
Volcano
You don’t wanna, you don’t wanna know

[Verse 2]
Your eyes were like landing lights
They used to be the clearest blue
Now you don’t see so well
The future’s gonna land on you

[Pre-Chorus]
Been out in the wild
Been out in the night
Been out of your mind
Do you live here or is this a vacation?

[Chorus]
Oh, volcano
You don’t wanna, you don’t wanna know
Volcano
Something in you wants to blow
Volcano
You don’t wanna, you don’t wanna know
You’re on a piece of ground above a volcano

[Verse 3]
You were alone
And now you’re not alone
You were alone
You are Rock N Roll
You and I are Rock N Roll
You are Rock N Roll
You and I are Rock N Roll

[Chorus]
Oh, volcano
You don’t wanna, you don’t wanna know
Volcano
Something in you wants to blow
Volcano
You don’t wanna, you don’t wanna know
You’re on a piece of ground above a volcano

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I wonder how they tracked record sales for this album. Did they register every automatic download as a sale? Deduct for the uninstalls (of which I was one)?

    • Clay says:

Basically, they didn’t count the free downloads and started measuring sales once the album was commercially released a couple of months later. Of course, that meant the album’s official sales are among the band’s lowest because so many potential listeners already had it for free.
