Song of the Day #3,946: ‘Karma Police’ – Radiohead

Radiohead became eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 and was nominated in 2018 before making the cut this year. The band’s inclusion so quickly was a no-brainer given their commercial and critical success, paired with the boundaries they’ve pushed in the industry.

In addition to their wide-ranging sonic experimentation, their 2007 album In Rainbows was the first by a big-name act to be offered under a “pay whatever you want” model (I’m ashamed to admit I paid nothing). That strategy was an early forerunner of the streaming age we’re living in now.

Every one of the band’s nine studio albums has gone gold, and four have gone platinum. They’ve won six Grammys, including three for Best Alternative Music Album (OK Computer, Kid A and In Rainbows).

1997’s OK Computer topped many best-of lists that year and has shown up on just as many lists of the best albums of the 90s, and even all-time. For my money, 1995’s The Bends is even better.

As I’ve written many times on this blog, I stopped listening to Radiohead after OK Computer because their music got a lot too artsy and experimental for my taste. They continued to enjoy extravagant critical praise, of course.

But even if I lost interest in their music, I can’t argue for a second that they don’t belong in the Rock Hall.

[Verse 1]
Karma police, arrest this man
He talks in maths, he buzzes like a fridge
He’s like a detuned radio
Karma police, arrest this girl
Her Hitler hairdo is making me feel ill
And we have crashed her party

[Chorus]
This is what you’ll get
This is what you’ll get
This is what you’ll get
When you mess with us

[Verse 2]
Karma police, I’ve given all I can
It’s not enough, I’ve given all I can
But we’re still on the payroll

[Chorus]
This is what you’ll get
This is what you’ll get
This is what you’ll get
When you mess with us

[Bridge]
For a minute there
I lost myself, I lost myself
Phew, for a minute there
I lost myself, I lost myself
For a minute there
I lost myself, I lost myself
Phew, for a minute there
I lost myself, I lost myself

I’ve never really been a fan, but I’ll take your word for it that they belong in the Rock Hall.
