Song of the Day #3,932: ‘ocean eyes’ – Billie Eilish

I’ll make up for the lack of Billie Eilish on my blog to date by featuring a couple of her earlier songs this week.

‘Ocean Eyes’ was her breakthrough track, in that it took her from complete anonymity to viral success and a recording contract. This dreamy ballad was written by her brother Finneas O’Connell for his band (the members of which must hate him now). Eilish recorded it to serve as the soundtrack for a dance routine she was preparing for school. She was 14 years old.

She posted the track to Soundcloud, where it caught fire and turned into a major hit by indie streaming standards.

Eilish released the video below, shot against a curtain at her home, and to date it has been viewed more than 98 million times. Another video, featuring a choreographed dance routine, has close to 19 million. This dance was choreographed by the teacher who gave her the original assignment. No word on what grade she got.

[Verse 1]
I’ve been watchin’ you for some time
Can’t stop staring at those ocean eyes
Burning cities and napalm skies
Fifteen flares inside those ocean eyes
Your ocean eyes

[Chorus]
No fair
You really know how to make me cry
When you give me those ocean eyes
I’m scared
I’ve never fallen from quite this high
Falling into your ocean eyes
Those ocean eyes

[Verse 2]
I’ve been walking through a world gone blind
Can’t stop thinkin’ of your diamond mind
Careful creature made friends with time
You left her lonely with a diamond mind
And those ocean eyes

[Chorus]
No fair (No fair)
You really know how to make me cry
When you give me those ocean eyes (Those ocean eyes)
I’m scared (I’m scared)
I’ve never fallen from quite this high
Falling into your ocean eyes
Those ocean eyes

[Instrumental Break]

[Chorus]
No fair
You really know how to make me cry
When you give me those ocean eyes
I’m scared
I’ve never fallen from quite this high
Falling into your ocean eyes
Those ocean eyes

I hadn’t heard this song either (or seen either video), but it’s very nice. She and her brother are some talented siblings!
