Song of the Day #3,930: ‘Grinding All My Life’ – Nipsey Hussle

When rapper Nipsey Hussle was murdered last week, shot outside his Los Angeles clothing store, several of my Facebook friends were distraught. A lot of celebrities I follow on Instagram were similarly shaken, posting moving tributes to a man whose music and message had moved them.

All of those people are younger and blacker than me, and I’ve never been much of a rap fan, so I guess it’s no surprise that I live in a different world, one where I had never heard the name Nipsey Hussle until this tragic incident.

It turns out I’ve mentioned him once before on the blog, however. He is a featured artist on the YG track ‘FDT,’ which stands for Fuck Donald Trump. So clearly he had his priorities in order.

Hussle was born in south L.A. and spent time in a gang before finding success in the music business. He released more than a dozen mixtapes over 13 years before dropping his first full-length LP, Victory Lap, just last year. That album was nominated for a Best Rap Album Grammy.

He was a father of two and a community activist, a living example that people can survive even the direst of circumstances and emerge as a force for good.

A 29-year-old named Eric Holder has been charged with Hussle’s murder, though no motive has been offered by police. Interestingly, Holder is being represented by defense attorney Chris Darden, who once tried unsuccessfully to put O.J. Simpson behind bars.

[Chorus]
All my life, been grindin’ all my life
Sacrificed, hustled, paid the price
Want a slice, I could roll the dice
That’s why, all my life, I been grindin’ all my life, yeah
All my life, been grindin’ all my life (Yeah)
Sacrificed, hustled, paid the price (Whoa)
Want a slice, gotta roll the dice
That’s why, all my life, I been grindin’ all my life, yeah

[Verse 1]
Look, I’m married to this game, that’s who I made my wife
Said I’ll die alone, I told that bitch she prolly right
One thing that’s for sure, not a stranger to this life
Got a safe that’s full of Franklins and a shoulder full of stripes (Ah)
I don’t know a nigga like myself
I say self-made, meanin’ I designed myself
County jail fades, you can pull my file yourself
Bar raised, swallow rocks, I’m gettin’ high myself
Damn right, I like the life I built
I’m from west side, 60, shit, I might got killed
Standin’ so tall, they think I might got stilts
Legendary baller, like Mike, like Wilt
’96 Impala thug, life on wheels
Up against the walls, squabble at Fox Hills
Like a motherfuckin’ boss, ask me how I feel
Successful street nigga touchin’ his first mill’s

[Chorus]
All my life, been grindin’ all my life
Sacrificed, hustled, paid the price
Want a slice, I could roll the dice
That’s why, all my life, I been grindin’ all my life, yeah
All my life, been grindin’ all my life (Yeah)
Sacrificed, hustled, paid the price (Whoa)
Want a slice, I could roll the dice
That’s why, all my life, I been grindin’ all my life, yeah

[Verse 2]
Look, I got everythin’ I said I was gon’ get on my kid
In addition to that fact, I went legit on that shit
Now accordin’ to the way that I’m positioned in this biz
It look like I’m just gon’ keep on gettin’ rich (Ah)
I know that west side, RSC’s is us
LAPD on my dick, I’ma squeeze and bust
If a rap nigga dead, switch cheese and bust
All this rap money, nigga, look I need too much
Money, loyalty and love, in the dream we trust
You be switchin’ up the players on your team too much
Tiny copy, that’s my loc, yo supreme, what up
And we travel ’round the world gettin’ cream and what
Ain’t you get off on whoever hustle, seem to rush
Las Vegas, strip pop, yeah, you creep them punks
After all that lookin’ tough, all he see was stumps
50 Cent and Mayweather flee the scene with us, true story

  1. Dana Gallup says:

As I am older, though not necessarily whiter, than you, with far less knowledge of rap music or what the kids are listening to, I stood little chance of knowing about Nipsey Hustle or his music. Obviously, given his recent tragic demise, I along with the rest of the country now know his name all too well. I can certainly understand the appeal of a song like the you featured and of Hustle’s success story of overcoming the odds generally.
