Song of the Day #3,807: ‘Urgent’ – Foreigner

I’m passingly familiar with the next featured 1981 album, Foreigner’s 4. I bought it for $5 a couple of years ago because it seemed like an album I should own.

4 was, appropriately, the rock band’s fourth album. I was going to write that it was by far their most successful, but a quick check revealed that, while this album sold 6 million copies and spent 10 weeks in Billboard’s #1 spot, their 1978 album Double Vision actually outsold it by a million.

Double Vision‘s best-known song is ‘Hot Blooded,’ while 4 boasts a trio of songs that every music fan should know: ‘Juke Box Hero,’ ‘Urgent’ and ‘Waiting For a Girl Like You.’ The rest of the album maintains that level of quality, one melodic rocker after another showcasing Lou Gramm’s emotive vocals.

And now, I will turn things over to frequent commenter Dana, who (based on his history here) will express general admiration for 4 and then trash Foreigner’s 1984 hit ‘I Want to Know What Love Is.’ But I will first confess that I kind of love that song and all of its cheesy glory.

[Verse 1]
You’re not shy, you get around
You want to fly, don’t want your feet on the ground
You stay up, you won’t come down
You want to live, you want to move to the sound

[Verse 2]
Got fire in your veins
Burning hot but you don’t feel the pain
Your desire is insane
You can’t stop until you do it again

[Verse 3]
But sometimes I wonder as I look in your eyes
Maybe you’re thinking of some other guy
But I know, yes I know, how to treat you right
That’s why you call me in the middle of the night

[Verse 4]
You say it’s urgent
So urgent, so oh oh urgent
Just wait and see
How urgent my love can be
It’s urgent

[Verse 5]
You play tricks on my mind
You’re everywhere but you’re so hard to find
You’re not warm or sentimental
You’re so extreme, you can be so temperamental

[Verse 6]
But I’m not looking for a love that will last
I know what I need and I need it fast
Yeah, there’s one thing in common that we both share
That’s a need for for each other anytime, anywhere

[Verse 7]
It gets so urgent
So urgent
You know it’s urgent
I want to tell you it’s the same for me
So urgent
Just you wait and see
How urgent our love can be
It’s urgent

[Verse 8]
You say it’s urgent
Make it fast, make it urgent
Do it quick, do it urgent
Got to rush, make it urgent
Want it quick
Urgent, urgent, emergency

[Outro]
So urgent, emergency
Emer… emer… emer…
It’s urgent

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Lol, I suppose I am nothing if not predictable.😁

I was never really a big Foreigner fan, but Double Vision and 4 were inescapable during my formative years. Generally, their more accessible brand of commercial rock was hard to resist, but resist I did when they went all commercial, no rock with the scmaltzy “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Yuck!
