Song of the Day #3,791: ‘Who’s Crying Now’ – Journey

Before I begin, Happy 18th Birthday to my nephew Daniel! If you haven’t had a chance to listen to his recent EP, Daniel Gallup, you can do so through my blog right here.

My #4 album of 1981 is the only one on this list that I actually listened to in 1981. In fact, I’m pretty sure Journey’s Escape was the first album I ever owned. It was also the first (and last) album I ever experienced in the form of an arcade game.

This earnest rock masterwork has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide and over the decades has turned critics who looked down their noses at the band into real fans. There’s a reason cultural institutions as varied as Glee and The Sopranos turned to this music for important scenes.

In addition to the undeniable classic ‘Don’t Stop Believin’,’ this album fits my “three great songs make a great album” criteria easily, with ‘Who’s Crying Now,’ ‘Stone in Love,’ ‘Still They Ride,’ ‘Keep On Runnin” and ‘Open Arms’ all earning repeat plays 37 years later.

[Verse 1]
It has been a mystery
And still they try to see
Why something good can hurt so bad
Caught on a one-way streets
The taste of bittersweet
Love will survive somehow, some way

[Chorus]
One love feeds the fire
One heart burns desire
Wonder who’s crying now
Two hearts born to run
Who will be the lonely one
Wonder who’s crying now

[Verse 2]
So many stormy nights
So many wrongs or rights
Neither could change
Their headstrong ways
And in a lover’s rage
They tore another page
The fighting is worth
The love they save

[Chorus]
One love feeds the fire
One heart burns desire
Wonder who’s crying now
Two hearts born to run
Who’ll be the lonely one
Wonder who’s crying now

[Verse 3]
Only so many tears you can cry
‘Till the heartache is over
And now you can say your love
Will never die

Whoooooa-oh-whoa
Whoooa-oh
Ooooooh-whoa, ooh-whooa

[Chorus]
One love feeds the fire
One heart burns desire
Wonder who’s crying now
Two hearts born to run
Who will be the lonely one
Wonder who’s crying now

Thank you for the shout out to Daniel and his music on his 18th birthday. It’s crazy to me that I was four years younger than he is now when this album was released!

Like most kids in 1981, I was a big Journey fan and played this album on heavy rotation, though it was just as easy to hear most of the songs on the radio and MTV. And unlike much music from the 80’s, or really any decade, these songs have a timeless quality and hold up quite well today.

Isn’t “Faithfully”also on this album? I remember driving from UF to Jacksonville for a Journey concert. This music is so great. ❤️

Will always remember the final Sopranos scene and Journey’s song playing. Love that I can access Daniel’s music through your blog. Happy Birthday Daniel ❤️
