Song of the Day #3,776: ‘I’ll Be (Live)’ – Edwin McCain

A shout out to Daniel Gallup, an up-and-coming artist recently featured on the blog, for calling my attention to today’s clip.

Here, Edwin McCain talks about his biggest hit, ‘I’ll Be,’ during a live set at the Bing Lounge in 2011. He amusingly wonders why any one-hit wonder would have a negative opinion of the song that brought him fame and fortune.

Appropriately, I know nothing about Edwin McCain apart from this song, which reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1998. McCain has been releasing indie rock records for more than two decades now, including an EP a couple of years back.

[Verse 1]
The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful
Stop me and steal my breath
And emeralds from mountains that thrust towards the sky
Never revealing their depth
And tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I’ll be captivated, I’ll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above

[Chorus]
I’ll be your cryin’ shoulder
I’ll be love’s suicide
And I’ll be better when I’m older
I’ll be the greatest fan of your life

[Verse 2]
And rain falls angry on the tin roof
As we lie awake in my bed
And you’re my survival, you’re my living proof
My love is alive and not dead
And tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I’ll be captivated, I’ll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above

[Chorus]
And I’ll be your cryin’ shoulder
I’ll be love’s suicide
I’ll be better when I’m older
I’ll be the greatest fan of your life

[Verse 3]
And I’ve dropped out, I’ve burned up, I’ve fought my way back from the dead
I Tuned in, I turned on, remembered the thing that you said

[Chorus]
And I’ll be your cryin’ shoulder
I’ll be love’s suicide
And I’ll be better when I’m older
I’ll be the greatest fan of your life
And I’ll be your cryin’ shoulder
I’ll be love’s suicide
And I’ll be better when I’m older
I’ll be the greatest fan of your life

[Outro]
The greatest fan of your life

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I didn’t think this song was so old. It was never a big favorite of mine, but I like it far better now that I have seen how endearing the artist is from this clip courtesy of Daniel.😊

  2. Amy says:

I did like this song, or, at the very least, that great chorus. This clip makes me want to check out all the other great stuff he’s been doing over the two decades! since it was first released.

  3. The Cool Guy (Daniel) says:

I only started hearing this song when it was being performed ad nauseam on American Idol and The Voice. However, when I discovered this version I found myself liking it a lot better than hopeful singers belting it out trying to demonstrate their prowess. The song takes on a new life when sung by the original singer it seems, not just a cheesy love song but a meaningful one too.
