Song of the Day: 3,672: ‘God is a Woman’ – Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande’s new album, Sweetener, is still a month away, but she just dropped one of the more impressive and aggressively bizarre videos I’ve seen in awhile. It’s kind of the apolitical pop diva version of Child Gambino’s This is America in that its every frame invites dissection.

The premise of the song ‘God is a Woman’ is that Grande’s sexual prowess will make her lover believe that, indeed, God is a woman. The video depicts Grande in a series of visually arresting scenarios that symbolize this divine status.

Those visuals include, but aren’t limited to:

– Grande hula hooping a galaxy
– Grande fingering a hurricane
– Grande bathing nude in a sea of watercolors
– Grande sitting in a chair being bombarded by cruel words hurled by small piggish men
– Grande dancing in a candle flame
– Grande singing in front of a three-headed dog (Harry Potter’s Fluffy?)
– Grande hurling a sledgehammer through a glass ceiling after Madonna recites Samuel L. Jackson’s Biblical verse from Pulp Fiction
– A gopher shrieking twice in the middle of the song

It’s that last one that has me most perplexed. Is there a deeper symbolism to the gophers? Do they represent an increasingly combative and isolated society fighting back against social progress? Is it a way to discourage people from ripping the song’s audio from YouTube? Something else?

What do you make of the gophers, and the video in general?

[Chorus]
You, you love it how I move you
You love it how I touch you, my one
When all is said and done
You’ll believe God is a woman
And I, I feel it after midnight
A feeling that you can’t fight, my one
It lingers when we’re done
You’ll believe God is a woman

[Verse 1]
I don’t wanna waste no time, yeah
You ain’t got a one-track mind, yeah
Have it any way you like, yeah
And I can tell that you know I know how I want it
Ain’t nobody else can relate
Boy, I like that you ain’t afraid
Baby, lay me down and let’s pray
I’m tellin’ you the way I like it, how I want it

[Pre-Chorus]
(Yeah) And I can be all the things you told me not to be
(Yeah) When you try to come for me, I keep on flourishing
(Yeah) And he see the universe when I’m in company
It’s all in me

[Chorus]
You, you love it how I move you
You love it how I touch you, my one
When all is said and done
You’ll believe God is a woman
And I, I feel it after midnight
A feeling that you can’t fight, my one
It lingers when we’re done
You’ll believe God is a woman

[Verse 2]
I tell you all the things you should know
So baby, take my hands, save your soul
We can make it last, take it slow, hmm
And I can tell that you know I know how I want it, yeah
But you’re different from the rest
And boy, if you confess, you might get blessed
See if you deserve what comes next
I’m tellin’ you the way I like it, how I want it

[Pre-Chorus]
(Yeah) And I can be all the things you told me not to be
(Yeah) When you try to come for me, I keep on flourishing
(Yeah) And he see the universe when I’m in company
It’s all in me

[Chorus]
You, you love it how I move you
You love it how I touch you, my one
When all is said and done
You’ll believe God is a woman
And I, I feel it after midnight
A feeling that you can’t fight, my one
It lingers when we’re done
You’ll believe God is a woman

[Outro]
(God is a woman)
Yeah, yeah
(God is a woman, yeah)
My one
(One)
When all is said and done
You’ll believe God is a woman
You’ll believe God
(God is a woman)
Oh, yeah
(God is a woman, yeah)
(One)
It lingers when we’re done
You’ll believe God is a woman

I don’t know what’s up with the gophers, but I do know that Pete Davidson is one lucky gopher!😊

    Wack a mole?

This song is so so good and I’m excited to hear the rest of this album. It seems like Ariana is at the peak of her creative game, and this video is so crazy. The budget that went into making some of those shots that only last for a few seconds must be insane. Anyway, it kind of has an American Gods vibe, and I love it. I’d heard the song several times without the video, so I’m glad you featured it today so I would remember to finally watch!

First, Georgia O’Keefe would be proud of all the not so subtle vagina imagery throughout. Second, perhaps it was only because of point one, but when she’s standing in front of the doors, I could only think of the Coen brothers’ Gutterballs sequence. :). Third, I, too, was imagining Pete Davison may have contributed the gopher idea. Or, at the very least, inspired it. The gopher is every boy flummoxed to the point of being nothing more than an inarticulate animal… no lion or tiger, but a gopher, when in the presence of this she-god. Just a thought.
