Song of the Day #3,598: ‘Bye Bye Bye’ – NSYNC

I’ve featured nine critically-acclaimed albums from the year 2000, with decidedly mixed results, so I figured I’d throw a bone to the most commercially successful album of that year, NSYNC’s No Strings Attached.

This was not just the best-selling album of 2000, but a record-holder for best first week’s sales (2.4 million) for 15 years, until Adele’s 25 obliterated that mark by nearly a million copies.

The title No Strings Attached referred to the band’s struggle to get out of a management deal they felt was robbing them of both profits and creative control. The band members played a role in the songwriting and production.

While NSYNC was initially dismissed as an imitator of fellow boy band Backstreet Boys, the success of this album permanently removed that second-tier status. Of course, the whole boy band thing pretty much played itself out by the early 2000s anyway, and NSYNC released their final album in 2001.

I was completely dismissive of music like this back when it was popular. But, to quote Bob Dylan, I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now. I see the appeal in a well-processed pop song, and I understand why these bands made such a mark.

That concludes my look back at the year 2000 in music. My conclusion is I didn’t miss a whole lot. When I return to the Decades series, I will pick things up in 1971. Can’t wait.

[Intro]
Hey, hey
Bye, bye, bye
Bye, bye
Bye, bye

[Verse 1]
Girl I’m doing this tonight
You’re probably gonna start a fight
I know this can’t be right, hey baby come on
I loved you endlessly
And you weren’t there for me
So now it’s time to leave and make it alone

[Pre-Chorus]
I know that I can’t take no more, it ain’t no lie
I wanna see you out that door
Baby bye, bye, bye

[Chorus]
(Bye) Don’t wanna be a fool for you
Just another player in your game for two
You may hate me but it ain’t no lie
Baby, bye, bye, bye
(Bye) Don’t really wanna make it tough
I just wanna tell you that I had enough
Might sound crazy but it ain’t no lie
Baby, bye, bye, bye

[Verse 2]
Just hit me with the truth
Now, girl you’re more than welcome to
So give me one good reason baby come on
I live for you and me
And now I really come to see
That life would be much better once you’re gone

[Pre-Chorus]
I know that I can’t take no more, it ain’t no lie
I wanna see you out that door
Baby bye, bye, bye

[Chorus]
(Bye) Don’t wanna be a fool for you
Just another player in your game for two
You may hate me but it ain’t no lie
Baby, bye, bye, bye
(Bye) Don’t really wanna make it tough
I just wanna tell you that I had enough
Might sound crazy but it ain’t no lie
Baby, bye, bye, bye

[Interlude]
I’m giving up I know for sure
I don’t wanna be the reason for your love no more
(Bye, bye) I’m checkin’ out, I’m signin’ off
I don’t want to be the loser and I’ve had enough

[Bridge]
I don’t wanna be your fool
In this game for two
So I’m leaving you behind
Bye, bye, bye
I don’t wanna make it tough
But I’ve had enough
And it ain’t no lie
My baby

[Chorus]
(Bye) Don’t wanna be a fool for you
Just another player in your game for two
I don’t wanna be your fool
But it ain’t no lie
Baby, bye, bye, bye
(Bye) Don’t really wanna make it tough
I just wanna tell you that I had enough
Might sound crazy but it ain’t no lie
Baby, bye, bye, bye
