Song of the Day #3,570: ‘Capital Letters’ – Hailee Steinfeld

While I try not to judge anybody’s taste in movies, I’m also happy to report that I have never seen a Fifty Shades film. But I have to give the series credit for producing some interesting pop music.

From Beyonce’s slowed down, dangerously sexy version of ‘Crazy in Love’, Ellie Goulding’s ‘Love Me Like You Do’ and The Weeknd’s ‘Earned It’ (all on the first film’s soundtrack) to contributions by Taylor Swift, Halsey and Sia in the second film, producers have made sure these movies are musical as well as cinematic events.

The latest film, Fifty Shades Freed, hasn’t given us a breakout hit but today’s SOTD by Hailee Steinfeld is a worthy addition to the lineup. ‘Capital Letters’ is less sexy than sweet, and maybe that’s appropriate for a performer who just turned 21 in December.

As I’ve written before, I find Steinfeld much more engaging as an actress than a singer, but this is an enjoyable song nonetheless.

Never was a leader
Never had a thing for fairytales
Not really a believer, oh-oh
Small voice in the quiet
Guess I never dared to know myself
Can my heart beat quiet? No

But then there was you (but then there was you)
Yeah, then there was you
Pull me out of the crowd
You were telling the truth (you were telling the truth)
Yeah (yeah, yeah)
I got something to say now
‘Cause you tell me that there’s no way I couldn’t go
Nothing I couldn’t do
Yeah, yeah

I want to get louder
I got to get louder
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We’re blowing out speakers
Our heart a little clearer
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go

For worse or for better
Gonna give it to you
In capital letters

We put a crack in the shadows
And you tell me it’s okay to be the light
And not to swim in the shallows
No, no
And I wanna get drunk with you
When we lie so still, but you’re taking me places
Holding me onto you
And we don’t care who’s watching us, baby

But then there was you
(But then there was you)
Yeah, then there was you
Pull me out of the crowd
You were telling the truth
(You were telling the truth)
Yeah (yeah, yeah)
I got something to say now
‘Cause you tell me that there’s no way I couldn’t go
Nothing I couldn’t do (no, no)
Yeah, yeah

I want to get louder
I got to get louder
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We’re blowing out speakers
Our heart a little clearer
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go

For worse or for better
Gonna give it to you
In capital letters

In capital letters
In capital–
Gonna give it to you
Gonna give it to you
Gonna give it to you

I want to get louder
I got to get louder
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We’re blowing out speakers
Our heart a little clearer
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
I want to get louder
I got to get louder
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We’re blowing out speakers
Our heart a little clearer
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go
We ’bout to go up baby, up we go

For worse or for better
Gonna give it to you
In capital letters

While Steinfeld may be a better actor than singer, I always seem to enjoy her music as well. Quite a talented 21 year old girl!

  2. Peg Clifton says:

Haven’t seen any of those movies either. Only movie I’ve seen with Steinfeld was True Grit I believe and she was very good. Very talented young woman
