Song of the Day #3,569: ‘Flower of the Universe’ – Sade

Ava Duvernay’s much-anticipated film A Wrinkle in Time turned out to pretty much suck, but it is notable for bringing the iconic Nigerian songstress Sade back after an 8-year hiatus.

Sade (which is both lead singer Helen Folasade Adu’s professional name and the name of the band she has fronted for 35 years) contributed the acoustic track ‘Flower of the Universe’ to the film’s soundtrack.

This sleepy ballad leans on Sade’s instantly recognizable voice, which sounds no different in her 59th year than it did when she sang ‘Smooth Operator’ at 24.

Oooo ooo ooo
Oooo ooo ooo

[Verse 1]
They come to see the fire burning in your heart
They want to witness, this love from the start

[Chorus]
They hear you when you cry
This love is far and wide
When you smile the stars align
Flower of the universe
And child of mine

Oooh, ooh, ooh

[Verse 2]
When you sleep softly the angels come
Like diamonds, like my love
They want to know it’s true
There’s someone in the world, lovely as you

[Chorus]
They hear you when you cry
This love is far and wide
When you smile the stars align
Flower of the universe
And child of mine

Oooo ooo ooo
Oooo ooo ooo
Oooo ooo ooo
Oooo ooo ooo

I don’t think the film “sucked,” but it was certainly a disappointment.

Meanwhile, as far as I knew, Sade has been on a 25 year hiatus, but it’s nice to see that she still has that same lovely sound. Perhaps this song will find its way to an Oscar nomination – likely the closest the movie will come to the Oscars.

Always have loved her voice , hard to believe she has been around this long
