Song of the Day #3,565: ‘Inside Your Heaven’ – Carrie Underwood

Today’s random track is a paint-by-numbers “God is love” song from Carrie Underwood’s 2005 debut, Some Hearts. It would have been more appropriately timed a week ago for Easter Sunday.

But what makes ‘Inside Your Heaven’ interesting isn’t its music or lyrics but rather its Billboard chart history.

Underwood won the fourth season of American Idol in May of 2005. In June, she released this song as her first official single. It hit big, debuting at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 and signaling that (unlike the previous two Idol winners) Underwood would have a promising career.

One week later, Idol runner-up Bo Bice released his first single — his own version of ‘Inside Your Heaven.’ It debuted at #2 on the Hot 100, bumping Underwood to #3 (Mariah Carey claimed the top spot). The following week, Underwood dropped a spot to #4, while Bice fell three spots to #5.

Essentially, the American Idol finalists were competing all over again, with Underwood again emerging the victor.

I don’t know if this is the only time in Billboard history that the same song was in the top five recorded by two different artists, but it may well be. Other songs have reached #1 by multiple artists, but always years apart.

[Verse 1]
I have been down
Now I’m blessed
I felt a revelation coming around
I guess it’s right, it’s so amazing
Everytime I see you I’m alive
You’re all I have got
You lift me up
The sun and the moonlight
All my dreams are in your eyes

[Chorus]
I want to be inside your heaven
Take me to the place you cry from
Where the storm blows your way
I want to be the earth that holds you
Every bit of air you are breathing in
A soothing wind
I want to be inside your heaven

[Verse 2]
When we touch, when we love
The stars light up
The wrong becomes undone
Naturally, my soul surrenders
The sun and the moonlight
All my dreams are in your eyes

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
When minutes turn to days and years
If mountains fall, I will still be here
Holding you until the day I die
And I want to be inside your heaven
Take me to the place you cry from
Where the storm blows you away

[Chorus]
I want to be inside your heaven
Take me to the place you cry from
Where the storm blows you away
I want to be the earth that holds you
Every bit of air you’re breathing in
A soothing wind
I want to be inside your heaven
Oh yes I do
I want to be inside your heaven

  1. Dana Gallup says:

This doesn’t seem to be a song about God, but rather about a relationship. Very strange that both idol contestants would even be allowed to release the song. That might make more sense if it was the show’s finale song, but I’m not sure that was the case here.

Whether it’s sung to God or a man, and I agree it could be either, it’s certainly using Biblical imagery to describe love.
